Greetings
I’ve mentioned before that one of the primary benefits of our club membership are the folk we have the privilege of fellowshipping with. There are so many great people I have come to know simply because I joined Tennessee Valley Woodworkers. During our 40th Anniversary, it might be a good time for us to reflect on some of those good men who’ve crossed our paths and enriched our lives-
folk like Tom Cowan, Tom Church, Jack Townsand, Bob Addington and so many more.
But the one I’d like to reflect on now is Henry Davis. As you all probably know, Henry was a founding member and was instrumental in the club’s longevity. For the last five years or so, Henry and I have been partners of sorts producing weaving frames and other tools for a mother/daughter team in Sante Fe. The production level had increased to where it was almost more that Henry could do by himself. Fortunately, much of the work was suited to CNC manufacture, so Henry recruited me. I made the parts and Henry did the assembly.
I learned a lot from Henry over the past several years. He was a stickler for details. I don’t know how many frame parts I’ve made during our partnership, but Henry knew. In fact, he numbered every frame and braiding tool he ever made and kept records to whom it was sold. Henry and I had very different personalities, but we became close friends. I’ll miss him.
Now let’s get started with SPLINTERS.
June Program
Tony Murphy will discuss furniture making.
July Program

May Show & Tell
Here are the items shown in the May meeting –
Jim Joliffe showed historical pictures from the Tullahoma 2014 show. Pictures included a variety of bowls on a unique stand, a pair of lamps, a fiddle, a guitar, a music stand, a full human carving and a “hat man” carving.
Jim also showed a totem pole the carvers worked on in the shop and took to a variety of festivals.
Geoff Roehm showed rosettes he made for various guitars over the years from spalted wood tiles cut from trapezoidal pieces of wood and book matched. (Pic 1, Pic 2, Pic 3, Pic 4, Pic 5, Pic 6, Pic 7, Pic 8, Pic 9)
He also showed the dust hood for his CNC machine. The dust hood has a brush that can be pulled off to change the bits.
Geoff also showed a circular staircase he built in Sewanee. It was the second set of stairs put in the house before the house was completed. The first staircase was way off so they tore it out. Neither level of the floors was level so a transit was used to measure level. The stairs were modeled in Cad before building. Evey riser had to be different and it was built with individual horses for each tread and riser.
Next Geoff showed another rosette he made from spalted sycamore and then another two in spalted maple. He went through slides showing various rosettes in different stages of completion. (All rosettes are shown above)
Geoff also showed his 4’x4’ CNC machine. He decided it was too large for his shop so it is for sale. It is a Woodline-1313. (Pic 1, Pic 2, Pic 3, Pic 4)
Larry Wendland showed an unfinished bowl made of Norfolk pine. The wood was dried for two years and cut on the end grain. Larry got a hook cutter, and it did pretty good but vibrated some. He found a straight hook turning chisel and one with a slight curve that were made in Belgium and cost $135. He has not decided if the wall is thin enough so he may turn the bowl thinner.
Larry also showed a box elder pepper mill finished with polyurethane.
Carver’s Corner
The Splinter Carvers continue to meet first and third Saturdays of the month from 8:30 am to 10:30 am (whether Jim’s there or not). The shop is located at 201 Jolliffe Acres Ln, Tullahoma. Tools and wood are available at the meetings, just bring yourself and try your hand at carving!
CCA Charter Member Rich Wetherbee Seminar is scheduled Sat-Sun October 18th-19th at Jim Jolliffe’s shop. The club is offering a 25% scholarship and the Splinter Carvers are providing another 25% scholarship to the Oct 18-19 Rich Wetherbee carving seminar for TVW members who would like to attend. That reduces the price to $85/carver plus the cost of any roughouts. Lunch will be provided both days. The seminar will run from 9 AM -4 PM each day.
