Greetings
I recently saw an interesting observation about time-
“Your future is approaching at the incredible speed of 60 minutest per hour.” Another related observation – “the best way to accomplish something is to do something.”
In other words, Time is short. If you want to accomplish anything around the house or in the shop, get with it.
Just so you know, everything written so far was for my benefit. If you can profit from the advice, feel free.
Now let’s get started with SPLIINTERS.
March Meeting
It will be Social Hour this month. I’d like to hear about your approach to keeping your shop organized/clean.
February Program
Gary Runton discussed how he made his A-Frame clamp rack.
February Show & Tell
Brenda Zuccaro made a napkin holder with legs turned on a lathe and side decorations cut on a scroll saw. It was made of walnut with a spray finish.
Michael Zuccaro made a cherry end table. The top had a crack, so he butterflied it. The table had a linseed oil finish. He also showed an oak pizza peel he made with an olive oil finish.
Vince Zaccardi used scrap from cherry, ambrosia maple, oak, and walnut and applied 3 coats of walnut oil to each. The oil did almost nothing the ambrosia maple, it darkened the oak and looked best on the walnut. Walnut oil test
Gary Runyon showed 4 threaded acorn boxes he made. They had redbud and cherry tops and dogwood bottoms. They had a Dr. Woodshop finish. The bowl they were in was made by Vince Zaccardi.
Ron Bundy made a cigar holder and shot glass rack from barrel staves. He used metal from the barrel ring to make rivets for the cigar holder and used J-B Weld to hold the rivets in. The finish was walnut oil with carnauba wax in the oil. He also showed an adjustable stand he made to sit by the couch. He made it out of oak with walnut runners. Ron finished the stand with lacquer.
Fortieth Anniversary
I’d like to thank Loyd Ackerman and our president, Jim Jolliffe for all the work they’re putting into the 40th anniversary activities. Loyd is putting together new videos/slideshows from old clips and pics. That sort of thing is very time consuming. Jim is working with the caterer to make sure everything is perfect (or just a little bit better) and heading up the planning committee. Give them a hearty thanks and maybe a pat on the back, if you get the chance.
Carver’s Corner
The Splinter Carvers continue to meet first and third Saturdays of the month from 8:30 am to 10:30 am (whether Jim’s there or not). The shop is located at 201 Jolliffe Acres Ln, Tullahoma. Tools and wood are available at the meetings, just bring yourself and try your hand at carving!
