Tennessee Valley Woodworkers

Greetings

A new year holds great promise. For Tennessee Valley Woodworkers, this year holds a special event. In November of this year our club will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Our intention is not to celebrate just in November, but the entire year.

The 40th Anniversary Celebration Committee members are: Loyd Ackerman, Richard Gulley, Tom Gillard, Vince Zaccardi, Larry & Sherry Wendland, Chris and Joetta Sautter, Karen Browning, Michael & Brenda Zuccaro, and Jim Jolliffe. If you have any suggestions for activities during the year, pass them along t one of the committee members.

I will be posting videos throughout the year of charter members and past members who have contributed so much to our club. The first is a 2009 video of charter member Tom Cowan demonstrating hand cut dovetails.

January Meeting

Our program for the January meeting will be on Marquetry presented by Austin Chandler.

December Super Show & Tell

I’m really sorry I had to miss Super Show & Tell. It’s one of my favorite programs of the year. It looks like this one was no exception.

Gary Runyon showed an Arts & Crafts style stained glass floor lamp that followed the style of a grandfather clock.  He used curly cherry and birds eye maple and beautiful stained glass.  He finished the lamp with Minwax antique oil. (Pic1, Pic2, Pic3, Pic4, Pic5)

Chris Sautter showed us a shoe rack made of maple, walnut and cherry.  The shoe rack breaks down for easy disassembly and assembly. He finished the rack with Tried & True. (Pic1, Pic2)

Dan Buholzer carved an owl in South American Spanish cedar.  He used clear coat for the finish.

Zachary Zuccaro turned a maple bowl.  He used epoxy and linseed oil to finish it.

Brenda Zuccaro made a scroll sawn Nativity scene made of spruce and cedar.  She finished it with lacquer. Brenda and Michael also showed a napkin holder they made together made of walnut and maple and finished with lacquer.

Michael Zuccaro made a Telecaster-style electric guitar made from vintage Brazilian rosewood and maple.  He finished it with lacquer.

Loyd Ackerman showed two of his segmented turnings.  One was made from lyptus and turned in 2004.  It was finished with polyurethane.  Another was made from walnut and maple segments and turned in 2021 and finished with lacquer. (Pic1, Pic2)

Vince Zaccardi showed a 4” platter made from ambrosia maple and finished with lacquer.  He turned a natural edge maple bowl and finished with Tried and True.  He also showed two turned bowls made from maple and spalted maple, both awaiting a finish. (Pic1. Pic2. Pic3, Pic4)

Jim Jolliffe showed some old and new Santa basswood carvings finished with boiled linseed oil, acrylic wash, lacquer and wax. Jim also showed an unfinished cherry hat rack he made to store baseball style hats. He showed a laminated cutting board made of ambrosia maple, cherry and walnut. He showed it unfinished but applied a mineral oil finish after the meeting to send it to its new home.

I posted a few pictures from our December Christmas party. You can see them at

Sweeping Up

My granddaughter got me a “Bad Dad” joke book for Christmas. I’ll be sharing a few with you this year.

I usually avoid political stuff, but this is just the truth.
