GENERAL MAINTANCE TIPS

BASIC MACHINE MATERIALS

  • CAST IRON
  • ALUMINUM
  • COMPOSITES
  • TITANIUM COATINGS
  • GRANITE

CAST IRON RULES

  • WHEN DISCUSSING WOODWORKING MACHINES CAST IRON IS THE MOST PREVALENT USED MATERIAL.
  • FOR THIS PRESENTATION WE WILL DISCUSS ALL MATERIALS BUT, CONCENTRATE ON CAST IRON.

SOUTHERN CLIMATE

  • Tennessee’s ever-changing climate takes a toll on bare metal machines and motors.
  • When performing maintenance on equipment always pay attention to the motor and switches.
  • Use an air hose to blow the dust out of both the motor and switch.

TABLE SAW TOPICS

  • BINDING & DIFFICULT TO MOVE HANDWHEELS
  • PITCH BUILD UP ON BLADES AND INSIDE SAW
  • RUST REMOVAL
  • RUST PREVENTATIVES

DUST EXTRACTION

  • DUST IS THE ENEMY!
  • USE AIR COMPRESSOR TO BLOW OUT AS MUCH DUST AS POSSIBLE.

AIR CHUCK EXTENSION WORKS WELL FOR HARD TO REACH AREAS AND BOTTOM OF SAW.

BINDING HAND WHEELS

  • CAUSE…. DUST and WOOD CHIPS MIXED WITH GREASE…HARD GREASE.
  • CLEAN WORM GEARS WITH SOLVENT and NYLON or WIRE BRUSH.

WORM GEARS

SOLVENT

  • CARB CLEANER WORKS WELL
  • USE WIRE BRUSH FOR HARD BUILD UP

PLACE RAGS IN BOTTOM OF SAW TO PROTECT PAINT and EASY CLEAN UP.

LUBRICATION

  • USE A DRY LUBRICANT ON GEARS INSTEAD OF GREASE. (LOWE,S CARRIES THE DRY

BE LIBERAL WITH DRY LUBE and TURN THE HAND WHEELS WHEN APPLYING.

SAW TOP

  • SCOTCH BRITE PAD GREEN OR RED ) ALONG WITH WD 40
  • SANDING BLOCK or SANDPAPER
  • RANDOM ORBIT SANDER and WD 40 CREATES A SLURRY.

EXCESSIVE RUST USE RUST REMOVER
Special note on sandpaper !

  • Start with 400 or 600 grit sandpaper. You don’t want to scratch up the cast iron top.
  • If you are not getting the result you want then move to more aggressive grits. Then work back up to 400/600 to polish the top.

This method is for cast iron. If your top is something else use something like rubbing compound.

PERSONAL PREFERENCE

  •  I’ve used a number of products both on my own and with Delta.
  • My preference is Johnson Paste Wax.
    Repels dust
    Easy to apply
Inexpensive and lasts a long time

DETAILS DETAILS

  • DON’T FORGET THE FENCE AND RAILS.
  • REMOVE ANY BURRS
  • WAX THEM DOWN AS WELL. THEY WILL MOVE LIKE NEW.

BAND SAW

  • TREAT ALL CAST IRON SAME AS TABLE SAW
  • TIRES: USE MINERAL SPIRITS TO CLEAN
  • STICKY BEARINGS: CLEAN and USE LIGHT OIL, WIPE OFF EXCESS.

RESOURCES

  • LOTS OF YOU TUBE VIDEOS ON BAND SAW SET UP AND TUNE UP.
  • CARTER PRODUCTS HAS THE BEST STEP BY STEP BAND SAW TUNE UP VIDEO. THE INSTRUCTOR REALLY MAKES IT SIMPLE!
  • DON’T OVER THINK IT!!!

PREVENTION

  • ALWAYS RELIVE TENSION ON THE BAND SAW BLADE IF NOT IN USE.
  • IT WILL SAVE YOUR TIRES.
  • I’ve seen several cases where band saw tires were ruined due to excessive tension.

QUICK NOTE ON EXCESSIVE BAND SAW VIBRATION

1.REMOVE BLADE (OUT OF BALANCE TOP

2.REMOVE MOTOR BELT (OUT OF BALANCE LOWER WHEEL OR ALMOST ALWAYS A HARD SPOT ON THE MOTOR BELT…REPLACE WITH LINK BELT).

3.PULLEY (IN RARE CASES THE MOTOR PULLEY OR THE WHEEL PULLEY MAY BE THE PROBLEM).

DRILL PRESS

  • TREAT ALL CAST IRON SURFACES and the COLUMN THE SAME AS THE TABLE SAW.
  • USE A WIRE BRUSH ON THE CHUCK WHILE ITS RUNNING.
  • DO NOT USE BELT DRESSING ON BELTS. TIGHTEN OR REPLACE.

SPLIT QUILL

  • CLEAN AND LIGHTLY GREASE THE DP QUILL.
  • USE THE QUILL HANDLE TO TIGHTEN THE QUILL. SO THAT THE DP HANDLES RETURN SLOWLY.
(THIS PREVENTS SLAP BACK AND A BROKEN RETURN SPRING).

image17.jpg

Additional Machines

  • Treat cast iron and steel the same as before.
  • Use a scotch bright pad and WD for the columns and posts.
  • Aluminum use a scotch bright pad and WD 40.

STATIONARY SANDERS

  • TREAT CAST IRON SURFACES SAME AS THE TABLE SAW.
  • BEARINGS: USE LIGHT OIL AND WIPE OFF ANY EXCESS

DRUM SANDER

  • CAST IRON SAME AS ALWAYS
  • SCREW POSTS CLEAN AND USE DRY LUBE
  • SANDING BELTS: GUM STICKS, PLEXIGLASS, ICE PICK AS IT ROLLS OVER

image25.jpg

$$$ – FREE SANDPAPER

  • Cloth backed sandpaper can be renewed to like new.
  • I’ve done this and believe me it works great no matter how gummed up the paper appears!!!
  • Use a pressure washer and hold the tip about 6” from the paper (no damage to the sand paper).

GENERAL MAINTANCE TIPS

NEVER NEVER USE WD 40 AS A LUBRICANT!!!!!
NOTE: WASHES OUT ANY GREASE OR OIL. AT

DELTA WE USED WD 40 TO CLEAN PACKING GREASE OFF NEW MACHINES.

MAINTANCE RUINED $11,000 DP with WD 40

EXTENSION CORDS

  • PURCHASE THE SHORTEST AND LARGEST GAGE. OTHERWISE, YOU WILL RUIN THE MOTOR
  • LOWER THE GAUGE BIGGER THE WIRE. (10 gauge is better than 18)
  • DP @ WALMART DC IN SHELBYVILLE (2 MOTORS)
  • CONTRACTORS SAW 10’ FROM WALL (BURNT MOTOR)
