Tennessee Valley Woodworkers

Greetings

We’re entering a busy time of year for Santa’s helpers. I’m already behind and don’t hold a lot of hope in catching up. But I’m enjoying cooler days and time spent in the shop.

Now let’s get started with SPLINTERS.

October Meeting

We enjoyed another club Social Hour. We’re a really interesting bunch of people! <grin>

 November Meeting

Our program for the November meeting will be the auction of shop equipment of recently deceased members, Jim Poteet and Felix Rees. Chuck Taylor will be sending out a list of items that will be offered. A picture, description, and minimum bid will be included.

We’ll miss these two men, but having a tool from them helps me remember.

 Looking Forward

Saturday, December 7th – TVW Christmas Party Lunch 11am-2pm, St Barnabas Episcopal Church, 110 E. Lincoln St, Tullahoma. Club will provide main course and drinks. Members bring sides and desserts to share. More info at the November meeting.

October Show & Tell

Rick Dickson displayed 2 boxes using Walnut and Maple and used Antique Oil Finish.

Mike Zuccaro brought 5 items. A Backgammon Board using Oak, Walnut and Cherry; a Chess board using Oak and Walnut; a Recipe Bookstand out of Walnut. These 3 were finished with oil. He also showed a very interesting puzzle board. For his Acoustic Guitar he used local Cherry, Rosewood, Ebony, and Spruce and finished it with French Polish.

Brenda Zuccaro made a small collapsible, fretwork, Christmas Tree which was made from Cherry and cut with a scroll saw. It was finished with oil and spray gloss.

Richard Gulley showed us a box with laser cut joinery. He made to hold silverware. He had Dog bone shaped letters to Santa.  He also showed us Jesus, O Holy Night, and Let it Snow ornaments. These were finished with spray paint and glitter glue.

Jim Jolliffe displayed several basswood carvings he completed including: A cowboy “Pard”, the “Small Brawl”, a “Ghoulish Gargoyle”, and a “Jam Night” guitar playing cowboy. These were finished with boiled linseed oil, acrylic paint wash and rattle can lacquer.

Tony Murphy brought in one of two End Tables he made out of cherry with maple drawer sides with half-blind dovetails for his mother using a Greene and Greene publication.

Carver’s Corner

The Splinter Carvers continue to meet first and third Saturdays of the month from 8:30 am to 10:30 am (whether Jim’s there or not).  The shop is located at 201 Jolliffe Acres Ln, Tullahoma. Tools and wood are available at the meetings, just bring yourself and try your hand at carving!

Internet Links of Interest

I’ve shared this link with a few club members, but I don’t think I’ve published it here. This is a scroll saw site, but it works great with a laser too. (A laser is just a scroll saw on steroids)
