Tennessee Valley Woodworkers

Greetings

I started this newsletter a week ago but it’s just about to come together. With the cooler weather, I’ve been spending a little more time in the shop. In fact, I broke down and bought a little window air conditioner to knock the edge off the high temps. I used it successfully for two day and then the temperature dropped. I turned it on yesterday just because I could.

Anyway, enjoy the cooler temperatures, get out in the shop and give Santa a helping hand.

Now let’s get started with SPLINTERS.

Tom Cowan Turning Bee

We had a around 17 brave souls turn out for the 2024 Turning Bee. We had 2 “never attended a meeting” folk and most all of the Steve Cox family were there. Thanks to Rick Laws for having the forethought to take a few pictures. I was too busy doing the things that a coordinator does. <grin>

 October Meeting

Gary Runyan will show us his A-frame clamp rack and explain the hows and whys of building it.

September Picnic

We had beautiful weather for the picnic. Good food, gooder fellowship, and the goodest hosts! Thanks to John and Janie Lovett for their hospitality. Thanks also to Jim Jolliffe for the pictures.

September Meeting

Social Hour. The only thing a woodworker likes better than woodworking is talking about woodworking. In some cases, actual woodworking may come in second. I said that last month and it turned out to be true.

September Show & Tell

Rick Dickson displayed an oak Jewelry Box with a removable shelf. It was finished with Antique Oil Finish.
Zadidy Zuccaro turned a small bottle with a cork stopper. Not sure of the wood used but was finished with Butcher Block Oil.
Mike Zuccaro showed us in-progress pictures of his Portable Kitchen Table made from Black Walnut. Go view the Sept Show & Tell Gallery for more pictures of Mike’s build.
Karen Browning shared with us how to prepare a log blank for Natural Edge turning. She also brought several finished examples. (Pic1, Pic2)
Micky Knowles turned a bowl out of Box Elder and finished with Sanding Sealer Lacquer.
Richard Gulley showed us a laser engraved Merry Christmas plaque with snow and a barn, Constructed in 3 thin layers: Background, Barn and Snow. Finished with rattle-can paint.
Gary Runyon presented 3 sliding lid boxes using Texas Mesquite Burl, Honey Locust, and Chittam Wood. These were finished with Minwax Antique Oil. He also turned 3 threaded Lid Boxes made from Hickory. These boxes were finished with Milk Paint and Dye and coated with Dr’s Workshop Oil.

Internet Links of Interest

Rick laws sent me an article comparing Hickory and Walnut species. It was lengthy and I couldn’t find the specific article to share the link. But I did find the website that produced the article. There’s a lot of good material there, so I recommend you take a look at it.
