Greetings
This last month has been a blur trying to get the website up and running, but I think we’re there. More about the website below.
There’s a rumor going around that Tennessee Valley Woodworkers Club will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next year. That sounds like a reason to celebrate! Stay tuned.
Now let’s get started with SPLINTERS.
Tom Cowan Turning Bee
Tom Cowan Turning Bee has been slipped to Saturday, September 14th, at The Church of the Nazarene, Decherd. Cost is $10 per person. There still may be some last minute changes. Be sure to make the Auguft meeting or Contact an officer for more info.
July Meeting
Rick Laws gave a presentation on The Joseph Greer House. It does my heart good to see folk putting time and effort into preserving our US history.
August Meeting
This month will be our annual auction. Bring something you’ve made or surplus tools for the sale. The proceeds will support future club activities
Tennessee Valley Woodworkers Website
MUCH effort has gone into moving our website to a different hosting service. A few folks to thank –
- First, thanks to the powers that be at UTSI. They have supplied our club with a great place to meet and have hosted our website for many years.
- Thanks to the IT folk at UTSI, especially Cliff Baker. He’s spent a lot of time moving our site, not once but to two different hosting sites. (The first didn’t work out.)
- Thanks to fellow club members who help maintain our site – Loyd Ackerman, Chuck Taylor, Jim Jolliffe, and Richard Gulley. (While we’re at it, thanks to all who have assisted in years past.)
The appearance of the websites has not changed much, if at all.
- But some content has been updated and that job continues.
- Accessing archives of past minutes and newsletters has been improved.
- The method of posting and retrieving minutes has been improved.
- Videos from our YouTube channel have been linked to our website. A new video, Fundamentals of Carving, by Jim Wright was recently added to the YouTube channel and the website.
July 2024 Show & Tell
Rick Laws showed us a book he’s writing – ‘The House of the Messenger’ about the Thomas Greer Family. He also showed 2 wooden Spoons from pecan finished with Walnut Oil.
Judy Bennett displayed 3 Christmas ornaments made from Rose Wood and finished with wipe-on poly.
Goeff Roehm made several handles for sharpening scrapers.
Larry Wendland turned 3 Pens using Woolly Mammoth tusk he picked up in Alaska.
Noah Stanley showed us a pair of drawer pulls out of Walnut finished with Osmo.
Internet Links of Interest
Here are a couple of video links that augment the information/presentation Rick provided at the last meeting.

Here’s an interesting link I found on Pinterest. There are some CNC projects and maybe some stuff suitable for laser or scroll saw.
Carver’s Corner
The Splinter Carvers continue to meet first and third Saturdays of the month from 8:30 am to 10:30 am (whether Jim’s there or not). The shop is located at 201 Jolliffe Acres Ln, Tullahoma. Tools and wood are available at the meetings, just bring yourself and try your hand at carving!
Sweeping Up
