Tennessee Valley Woodworkers

Greetings

Well, I’m finally experiencing one of my recurring fears – I forgot about the newsletter! I could list all my excuses (and a few or them are pretty good,) but in the end fact remains; I forgot the newsletter. But it could have been worse. It could have been 6:30 pm on Tuesday the 21st before I remembered. So maybe all is not lost. It’s now Sunday morning on the 19th. I started this late last night, so I’m confident you’ll receive something that resembles a newsletter before the meeting night.

Now let’s hurry and get started with SPLINTERS.

April Meeting

The program for April 16 will be Shop Tips and Tricks by Goeff Roehm, Gary Runyon and Jim Jolliffe

May Meeting

We will be having Social Hour this month on the 21st.

 April 2024 Show & Tell

Rick Laws brought in resin from Starbond, liquid dyes for a translucent effect or Mica color powder for an opaque look. He also brought in 4 cups/vases which he had turned using Privet and Tea Olive wood. Both were finished with poly. Pic1

Matt Brothers showed us 3 completed projects: a cedar-lined Hope chest, a jewelry box, and a 9-drawer Chest of Drawers. All were made from Quarter-Sawn White Oak and finished with Lacquer. The Hope Chest and Jewelry box had inlay on the top. Hope chest – (Pic1, Pic2, Pic3, Pic4, Pic5, Pic6), Chest of drawers- (Pic1, Pic2, Pic3, Pic4, Pic5), Jewelry chest- (Pic1, Pic2)

Jim Jolliffe carved and painted a Jester and a Viking. Both were made with Basswood and finished with BLO and acrylic paints. Jim also showed us a Liquor Chest commissioned by a friend and designed to fit into a closet. It was made using plywood back, sides and drawers secured with Kreg screws and glue.  He used cherry for the face frame, drawer fronts and top and finished the cherry with Danish Oil. Peter Hunter showed us his latest 3D CNC carving of his wife’s profile. He used Eastern White pine and it was left unfinished.

Richard Gulley brought a 3D CNC carved church plaque of Christ’s ascension made from Poplar and finished with 2 coats of amber shellac. He used a stain to add definition. Additionally, he showed us 2 rattlebacks which he made.

Gary Runyon displayed a Round Bottom Hand plane which was made by Paul Pitts using Poplar.

Internet Links of Interest

I’ve been downloading some new fonts lately. Here is a free source I like –

https://www.1001fonts.com/

Many fonts have a lot of extra characters (glyphs), but you have to have a character map program to access them. Windows has a program, but here’s one that’s easier to use –

Carver’s Corner

The Splinter Carvers continue to meet first and third Saturdays of the month from 8:30 am to 10:30 am (whether Jim’s there or not).  The shop is located at 201 Jolliffe Acres Ln, Tullahoma. Tools and wood are available at the meetings, just bring yourself and try your hand at carving!

Sweeping Up

Here’s some funnies you might like-

I chose these two because the guy reminded me of Sam Clark.

Submissions to the newsletter are more than welcomed. Send funnies, tips, or other content that may be of interest and you may see it in a future edition of SPLINTERS.
