Carver's Corner

The Splinters Carvers meet at Jim Jolliffe’s shop on the first and third Saturday's of the month from 8:30 am to 10:30 am. The shop is located at 201 Jolliffe Acres Ln, Tullahoma. Tools and wood are available at the meetings, just bring yourself and try your hand at carving!

July 27th Power Carving Seminar - On Saturday, July 27 the Splinter Carvers conducted a seminar on power carving at Jim Jolliffe's shop. The all-day event was requested by Wood Club members who have an interest in methods of wood carving other than gouges and knives. Jim Jolliffe started the seminar with a demonstration of chain saw carving a bear out of a pine log and explained along the way the methods for laying out a large-scale carving. Jim used a battery powered chain saw with a quarter coin sized bar tip to rough out the bear.

There was some discussion about personal safety equipment and which are appropriate or not for either a gas-powered saw or a battery powered saw.

Darrell Albert followed with demonstrations of many types of wood carving bits that can be used with angle grinders. Darrell demonstrated his tools and techniques on chittum wood burls and brought many finished items to illustrate what is possible. Jim concluded the seminar by showing the smaller power carving devices including reciprocating cutters like the AutoMach and the more common rotary Dremel tools. Seventeen Wood Club members attended the seminar which proved to be a valuable introduction into the craft of power wood carving.

Thanks to the TVW for covering the cost of the refreshments and a hearty Whiskey Trail BBQ lunch!
