  • Shop Tours

  • We are planning a shop tour for Saturday Sept. 17th. The tour will be at Henry Davis shop and will center around small projects that can be done in small shops and be marketed at businesses and farm markets etc. in our area. Anyone else who is presently doing this and would like to partner up with Henry in his shop is urged to come forward over the next couple of weeks so we can present their ideas as well. They can contact me (Jack Kincella) at the August meeting so we can include them. This can include pen or bowl making, carvings, or really any ideas that folks have and are doing.

  • Projects Plans

  • We are putting together club projects that will help in the communities and get attention and possibly enhance finances for the club. We have the Goodwill project for the rockets and Paul Jaul Jalbert and Jack Kincella have secured a project to restore 2 large entry doors for the CEO of Harton hospital, that will benefit the finances of our club as well as get great publicity for us.

    Carvers Corner

The August 6 session of the Carvers Clinic was very well attended and the highlight was Jim Jolliffe's summary of his week-long wood carving course in Nebraska. Many nationally recognized wood carving instructors were present. His personal project during the course was a Native American bust carving in butternut. Jim passed along to the rest of us carvers the guidance that he was given about carving features that attract attention to all sides of the carving and the use of specific tools to efficiently carve certain features. Blue Pau brought a stylized driftwood carving and an unfinished blue jay carving with burned-in realistic feathers. Other club members continue to carve whimsical houses cottonwood bark.

The carvers are continuing to meet twice a month on the first and third Saturday's of the month from 8:30 am to 10:30 am at at Jim Jolliffe's shop, located at Jolliffe Acres Lane, Tullahoma, TN.

    Shop Tip

      Bolt cutting

Cut bolts clean with no shredded threads
To cut bolts to length with a hacksaw, I made a simple bolt-holding vise jig from a piece of scrap hardwood. After drilling a hole the length of the scrap, where shown, I cut partially through the center of the jig with my bandsaw. When tightened in a bench vise, those jaws pinch the bolt firmly for a wiggle-free cut.

And here’s a trick to clear those threads that invariably get messed up during the cut: Thread a nut up the bolt before you cut; then remove it after. This cleans up any mashed threads. If you plan to cut more than one bolt to the same length, mark the location of the bolt’s tip while in the jig for a quick reference point.
