Shop Tours
I would like to give
you a report about the recent shop tour at Jim Jolliffe's shop where we attempted to provide
a shop tour that was
interactive, educational and fun. There were sixteen club members
present
including two very recent new members, Doug and Justin. Five of the
regular carvers were on hand with examples of their carvings, everything
from Ken's whimsical cottonwood bark houses, Bob's caricatures, Harry's
full-figure Indian carving and Dick's stylized carvings. Dick guided
some
of the group through a small owl carving and Paul provided a large board
with various patterns for those who wanted to try relief carving. We
discussed getting started in wood carving, carving tools and sharpening;
trying to expound on the presentations given at the last Club meeting by
Alf and David Sharp. While this meeting of the carvers was a deliberate
attempt to serve the entire Club, it was not too different from every
carver's meeting at Jim's shop: interactive, educational and fun!
Sincerely,
Paul Jalbert
Welcome To Our Library
So, how does our members get a CD to use to learn about something new in
woodworking? Well each member has access to our Club website and the
website has a complete directory of the CDs available to be signed out.
To get a CD the club member sends an e:mail to the current custodian
requesting a piece of media. The custodian will bring the CD to the next
meeting and provide it to the member and the custodian shall annotate
their files showing who has signed out the CD and the tentative “return
date”. The custodian shall; if the CD is not returned in the agreed
time, contact the member who signed for the CD and make arrangements for
the CD to be returned at the next meeting. If the member has a continued
need for the CD the “return date” shall be adjusted.
If the Club gets any more CDs that would interest the club the listing
on the Club website shall be updated and the membership notified of the
change at the next Club meeting after receipt of the CD. The custodian
shall also ask our Website Webmaster to place a notice of the update on
the Website and it will be included in the Newsletter to ensure we keep
our membership is notified of the addition to our media inventory.
The current custodian is Pete Miller and he can be reached via e:mail at
[email protected]. If you have any questions concerning the
process of getting a CD please drop him an e:mail.

Show & Tell
|
Doyle McConnell had pictures of a white
entertainment center he made with the help of a relative. |
|
Dexter Brady had pictures of the work he has done on his home.
He added a
screened in porch, with a brick foundation and a gabled
roof, and also the
bathroom renovation he had done. He then amazed us all with
the images of the
canoe he has been hand crafting for the last 7 years. It is
made from several
different woods, such as both red and white cedar, white
ash, yellow poplar, white oak, and cherry. The entire canoe
weighs less than 100 lbs. and is waterproofed by adding a layer
of fiberglass and covering that with an epoxy resin.
|
|
Doug Dunlap brought in several
intarsia Christmas ornaments made from poplar, oak, and
cherry woods, and finished with laquar.
|
|
Allen Odell showed us
several carvings he had done from the wood and bark from a
tree that has been growing on the family property for a long
time. They were a
lighthouse,
several cottages, and one of a turtle. |
|
Tom Cowan brought in a miniaturized
version of a
sunflower chest, made in 3/8 scale. It was made mostly from
white oak and pine, with the darker elements ebonized by placing
them in a container with vinegar and steel wool. |
|
Judy Bennett brought in several pieces
of intarsia, one a
lighthouse made from oak and cedar, and a
vase with flowers, done with purple heart and walnut, and
finished with a sprayed lacquar. |
|
Gary Bennett
showed us
several turned bowls that were started when the wood was
green, then finished later while in Florida. They were from
several different woods, 1 in cherry , 1 in walnut finished with
several coats of tung oil, some finished with carnauba wax,
applied with fine steel wool. He also turned a natural edge
bowl, turned from pecan. It was finished with wipe on poly, and
the edge was stabilized with CA glue. |
|
Ross Roepke
brought in a almost completed
table he is currently finishing for the Tullahoma Fine Arts
exhibition. He has managed to somehow construct it from left
over oak and walnut woods, from other projects he has done. |
