The August meeting will be at 7:00 pm on the 16th at the University of Tennessee Space institute, room H111.
The August program will be presented by Jim Everett,
one of our talented club members. Jim will be discussing the art of
“Intarsia”. He also will be showing some samples of his work.
This program promises to be a very interesting presentation.
Looking forward to seeing you at the August 16th meeting.
More information will be available on these events as the time draws near.

The Forum is up and running. If you have access to the Internet; this
is an opportunity to expand your woodworking knowledge, to ask
questions, to answer question and to share ideas with your fellow
woodworkers. Two avenues are available to get to the Forum web site: 1)
type in the Forum URL (
http://www.tnvalleywoodclub.org/phpbb3 ) from your web browser or 2)
open the forum by clicking on the “Forum” tab at the top of the TVW home
page.
There's an active dialog going on in a couple of forums. The statistics
show that many folks are browsing the forums, but not many are
registering to participate yet. A comment from one member: "I hope more
members decide to give it a try. I have picked up several tips in a
short time and from people that I can put a face with and know through
the club." We think that pretty well sums it up. The forum is for
everyone to benefit from everyone else's input. So register soon folks.
We need your participation. To quote one of our Club members: "It's nice
to have a group like this to learn from others' mistakes, so when we
make a mistake ourselves we recognize that we've just made a mistake."
We hope you'll register soon and be part of our information sharing
experience.
Be making plans for the TVW Fall Seminar. The date is October 22 at Cowan Artisans. This Seminar promises to be one of the best we have had. Plans are being finalized for this event and more information will be available at the next TVW meeting.
Watch for the announcement of the next “Shop Tour” schedule. It could be your shop, so keep it clean.
Recently, the club lost one of it's long-time members. Murrell Chattin. An article appeared in the Herald Chronicle under the "Letters to the Editor". You might want to take a look at the article. You can view the article contents by clicking here.
The carvers met on August 6th at Phil Bishop’s shop.
Those attending worked on individual projects and shared information
within the group.
The next major event for the carvers is the Polly Crocket Festival in
Cowan. The event dates are September 17-19.
The carvers normally meet on the first Saturday of each month and work
on individual or group projects.
Don’t forget about the great resource of information
in our library. New items are being added all the time. Take a look at
the list of topics at the next meeting.
Please remember that you can now view some of the club DVDs on line. Go
to the library listing on our club website and click on the underlined
titles.
For a complete list of all items in the Digital Library, see Henry Davis
at club meetings, email him at [email protected] or call him at
393-3191 and leave a message.

Here’s a simple trick for creating perfectly sized mortises at the drill press. Use an auxiliary fence and a stop block to locate the hole in one end of the mortise. Position the fence and a stop block to locate the hole in one end of the mortise. A spacer block locates the hole at the opposite end.
The spacer block is just a piece of scrap cut to the same length as
the mortise, minus the diameter of the drill bit. (For a 2"-long
mortise, cut with a ¼" bit, you’ll need a 1¾"-long block.) Make your
first cut with the spacer in place. Then remove it and keep drilling out
the waste until you hit the stop block.
