TVW News and Notes

Annual Turning Bee is coming up

One of the TVW favorite annual activities is scheduled for June 18. This is the Turning Bee that will be held at Tom Cowan's shop. This is a really great activity to learn turning skills from some of the club’s “experienced turners”. All attendees in the past have been really inspired by this event and many have become accomplished “turners”, as a result of attending one of these “learning experiences”. The details will be given at the next regular meeting.

Spring Seminar

The Spring Seminar was held on April 16 at Paul Fulk’s shop. The seminar was well attended and everyone came away with some great ideas to apply in their own shop. The list of presenters was outstanding and they all did a great job. Thanks to all the presenters, which included Phil Bishop, Doyle McConnell, Henry Davis, Anthony Watts, Matt Brothers and Mike Brumfield. A big thank you to Paul for organizing and hosting the seminar at his shop and to Karen Browning for coordinating the lunch.

Shop Tours

The latest “Shop Tour” was held on April 23rd and was well attended. The tour was in the Manchester area and included the shops of John Mayberry, Johnnie Brown & Bob Addington. Thanks to Doyle for coordinating these tours and to those opening their shops for the tours.

Cornbread Festival

The carvers were invited to participate in the Cornbread Festival in South Pittsburg on April 29 & May 1. The demonstrations and displays of the carvers drew large crowds of admiring onlookers. They were working on the “Totem Pole” during the Festival. Everyone had a great time at this new venue and it gave the club new exposure to the public. There are some great photos of the activity in the gallery section of the club web site. Look under carver events/2011 cornbread festival.

Carver's Corner

The carver’s monthly meeting on May 7 was a tour of the “Cowan Artisan Gallery”, operated by Tom Cowan and Geoff Roehm.
The carvers normally meet on the first Saturday of each month and work on individual or group projects

Shop  Tip

--Use Clamp-On Edge Guide for Straight-Edge Rip Cuts--

Having trouble ripping that first edge straight on boards for your next project? Try this method on your table saw.

To get that first straight edge on a board, try clamping an edge guide (see photo below) to the work piece so it overhangs the edge of the board slightly. With the edge guide lined up firmly against the table saw fence, you will get straight-edged rips every time.
