TVW News and Notes

Spring Seminar is coming up

The Spring Seminar is fast approaching. It is scheduled for April 16 and will be held at Paul Fulks’ shop. Additional information and details information will be given at the March meeting.

Carver's Corner

The carvers met on March 5th at the shop of Phil Bishop, with 12 energetic carvers in attendance. They started the process of "creating" another totem pole for the Cornbread Festival. This is the project they will be working on at the Festival.
The carvers normally meet on the first Saturday of each month.

TVW DIGITAL LIBRARY NEWS

Three new selections have been added to the Club Library. One DVD is the 15 minute slide presentation that Alf Sharp presented at the February meeting. We also have Alf's complete program on DVD. Both of these DVDs and many others can be viewed on line. Go to the library listing on our club website and click on the underlined titles.
Our third new selection is “Shop Storage Solutions”. If you have a storage problem in your shop, you might get a tip or two from this CD.
Just a reminder, if you have a library selection out, it is due to be returned at the next meeting.
If you find a woodworking related DVD that you would like to suggest we purchase for the library, please contact Henry Davis. Provide him with the specific title, where it can be ordered and order number.
Your donation of original woodworking DVDs, CD and VHS tapes are always appreciated. Remember we can't accept copied media.
For a complete list of all items in the Digital Library, see Henry Davis at club meetings, email him at [email protected] or call him at 393-3191 and leave a message.

February Show and Tell

Tom Gillard displayed the tongue that he had made for a scout’s chariot race where the boys were to use a barrel and develop a chariot. He also displayed a film clip of the competition. The other item that he showed was a binary adding machine.

Loyd Ackerman brought a small plant stand which he made with a removable Corian insert.

Jim Van Cleave displayed a carving of the Sons of the American Revolution Seal. He had taken the seal from a letterhead and enlarged it to provide a pattern.

Greg Myers showed a curly maple clock. This was the eighth one that he had made.

Doyle McConnell showed small items and encouraged members to use all their scraps. Among the items were bottle stoppers, purse hangers, trinket box and a small bowl.

Ross Roepke brought a stool that he had made for a Motlow College fund raiser.

Bob Leonard displayed two board carvings of cabin scenes. He indicated that he was learning as he progressed along, especially how to mix and use his paints.

Kevin Deuermeyer showed a clock that he had made using a pattern that recently appeared in a woodworker’s magazine. It used cherry, maple and walnut boards in the construction.

Karen Browning brought the first bowl that she made from a piece of cedar firewood back in 2002. She stated that she hoped to get back into turning soon.

Mike Addington brought several twisted limbs for “give away”.

Shop  Tip

Is your Framing Square Square?

First: To check the accuracy of your square, place it along the straight edge of a board and draw a perpendicular line.

Second: Now flip the square over and check to see if it lines up with the pencil line you just drew. If not, see photos below.

To fix the square - use a center punch: Strike the inside corner of the square with a center punch to open up the legs or the outside corner to close them.
