A NOTE OF APPRECIATION
The club received a note from the Ryans, concerning
the card they received from the club members. They are doing better, but,
have a long way to regain their health.
The Ryans wish to express their sincere appreciation
for your thoughtfulness and kind wishes by sending the card.
DECEMBER PROGRAM
Our December program is the annual “Giant Show & Tell”. This is your chance to bring those “special” items that you are so proud of and those “not so special” learning experiences that may not have turned out exactly as you planned. This is the time for you to share your woodworking “adventures” with the rest of the club. If you’re new to the Club or a visitor, here is how it works. Instead of a regular show and tell in which several members bring an item, we encourage EVERYONE to bring something to show. If you don’t have a current favorite project to share, bring an item from the past; maybe the first thing you ever built or something you built years ago but that you really enjoyed doing. Or you could bring an interesting tool or something someone gave you. You get the idea! If, on the other hand, you’d just rather not bring something, that’s OK, too. You can just come, enjoy the meeting, and join in the applause from the membership.

TVW
NEWS AND NOTES
A NOTE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
I want to thank everyone for
their support in making this year a very good one for the club. I
know you will stand behind and support the officers for the next year,
as you have in the past. What makes this a great club is your willingness
to step forward and do your part to promote the club and create the events
which help us all to be better woodworkers.
It was a pleasure to be your
2010 president.
Thanks,
Tom Cowan

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY
The annual Christmas Party was held at the Church of the Nazarene in Decherd on Friday December 10th. If you did not attend, you missed a really great party.
Thanks to Martha Taylor, chairperson, and her team for doing a wonderful job coordinating the dinner and decorating for the event. The food was great, the decorations were beautiful, all the gifts were wonderful and the fellowship was special.
The “2010 Review” slide show was very interesting. Thanks to Loyd for putting it together.
The singing, led by Richard Gulley, was great, as usual.
A good time was had by all attendees.
CARVER'S CORNER
Several carvers met on December 4th at Phil Bishop's shop. Those attending worked on various projects and discussed upcoming projects. The current plan is to go pick out a tree or trees in the next few days and start the process for next year’s projects. The future project may be a large bear or a totem pole.
A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN
A great way to start out the New Year is to “sharpen” some of your skills. Bob Reese is offering to help you with your sharpening techniques, especially turning gouges. All you have to do is contact Bob and set up a time for your training. You can contact Bob by phone (931-728-7974) or by email ([email protected]).
MEMBERSHIP FEES ARE DUE
TVW dues for 2011 are now payable. Our dues are $10.00 for a single membership, and $15.00 for a family membership (what a bargain).
You can pay the treasurer, Bob
Addington at the meeting or mail your dues check to Bob at his home address
(249 Big Oak Drive, Manchester, TN 37355).
DIGITAL LIBRARY NEWS
If you have not taken the opportunity to use the club “Digital Library”, 2011 would be a good time to start. See Henry at the next TVW meeting and review the long list of woodworking videos. There are videos that will interest everyone.
Henry would like to remind you that, if you have tapes or DVDs checked out to make every effort to return them, so other club members can enjoy them.
For a complete list of all items in the Digital Library, see Henry Davis at the next club meeting, email him at [email protected] or call him at 393-3191 and leave a message.

NOVEMBER MEETING SHOW AND
TELL:
Tom Gillard built a walnut and cherry display holder commemorating the National Boy Scout Jamboree for 2010.
Jay Hazel displayed a number of bowls made from maple, white oak, cedar, and mimosa. Jay also displayed a salt and pepper mill he made for a Christmas gift.
Loyd Ackerman turned a segmented bowl with stave construction and trapezoid construction. The woods used were walnut and hard maple.
Vince Zaccardi brought in a cherry bowl and a spalted maple bowl with texturing.
Kevin Deuermeyer completed two intarsia pieces. One picture was a barn made of five different woods (popular, sassafras, walnut, butternut, and cherry). The other was an apple with worm coming out of it. It was made from four different wood species (cherry, sassafras, walnut, and poplar.
Paul Jalbert completed a carved wooden quarter about a foot and half in diameter. The 25 cent piece commemorates the 25th year of the Tennessee Valley Woodworking Club.
Dick Wollam displayed a carved basswood dragon head. The spots on the dragon were made by using thinned walnut stain. The dragon’s horns and the teeth were made from PVC pipe that was shaped.
Sharron Wright brought in flowers she made from wood shavings. Sharon also discussed a display of blooms which were arranged in a glass bowl.
Michael Zuccaro displayed a guitar he made from rosewood. It was finished with nitrous cellulose lacquer.
Brenda
Zuccaro brought and discussed a bowl
and a cutting board.
SHOP TIP
--------------- "MAGNETIC STOP BLOCK" ---------------
When cross-cutting short pieces to the same length, it is a good idea to clamp a stop block to the rip fence of your table saw. This block provides clearance between the rip fence and the saw blade so the cut-off pieces don’t get trapped (and kick back).
Here is an idea that avoids the hassle of fiddling around with clamps. Instead, use a magnetic stop block. It’s just a hardwood block with a pair of small magnetic catches inserted into one edge, see drawing. Note: If the face of your rip fence is wood or aluminum, simply put the magnetic catches in the bottom face of the stop block.
"DO IT YOURSELF" HELP SITE
This is an interesting web site for all you "do-it-yourselfers". The site has nothing to do with woodworking, but can tell you a lot about trouble-shooting and repairing your appliances. The main feature is the "Ask the Repair Guru" section. If you have a repair problem, click here to find the answer to your problem.
LINKS AND CONTACTS -----
NEW LINKS HAVE BEEN ADDED
(TAKE A LOOK)
If you find a place to purchase something pertaining
to woodworking and would like to share that information with others, send
an email to Loyd Ackerman with
the details for inclusion. We're not trying to replace the Yellow
Pages; this is just for those special items and special contacts.
Information needed is: Name,
address, phone #, and website (if they have one) of the business and what
you found them.
MEMBER INFORMATION CHANGES
We strive to always keep the club membership roster listing up-to-date. If you have address, email or phone number changes, please contact Chuck Taylor (931-728-7086) or Bob Addington (931-723-2554) so that your information can be updated in our membership listings.
