SYMPATHY NOTE

We are saddened to learn that long time TVW member, Winfield Bennet, passed away on July 4th at the Winchester Hospital.  Those  who knew Winfield, will identify with his sense of humor.  Once in a conversation about tools, Winfield said "I only have one carving tool". Then pulled out his pocket knife.  He was known for his unusual carvings.  He once turned a broom handle into a chain with that pocket knife.

JULY PROGRAM

The July TVW program will be presented by David Sapp of the Woodcraft store in Franklin. David will be discussing some of the new products and services offered by the Woodcraft store. He will show the new “Saw-Stop” demonstration and discuss some table saw safety tips. Also, he will bring and discuss some of the Festool equipment.

Come and hear David’s interesting and informative presentation on July 20th.

HAPPENINGS AT THE JULY MEETING

Auction:  The Club is disposing of its Toshiba VCR/DVD player along with the cables to connect it. A VHS tape comes along with the unit.  This unit will be sold to the highest bidder at the July TVW meeting on July 20th.  The unit will play DVDs, CDs, and VHS tapes and record VHS tapes.  It has a TV tuner (meaning it can receive analog TV signals from a converter box or cable).  It will not play DVD+Rs made on a computer, but it will play DVD-Rs and all commercial DVDs.

Gift Certificate Giveaway: Stanley Dunn, of BRC, brought another gift certificate for the Club to raffle off.  The $25 certificate will be part of the drawing at the July meeting. BRC in McMinnville carries a wide range of local hardwoods specifically for woodworkers.

 TVW NEWS AND NOTES

SPINDLE TURNING & TURNING BEE WORKSHOPS

A “spindle turning” session was held on Friday June 18th at Tom Cowan’s shop. About 15 eager turners watched the demonstration by Tom. They were then able to “test” their skills and learn some valuable lessons concerning spindle turning techniques.

On Saturday, the 19th, one of the most popular TVW events was conducted. The turning bee was held with about 25 people in attendance. Tom Cowan was the demonstrator on the proper techniques of roughing a bowl from green wood. There were enough lathes and “instructors” available for everyone to get a chance to rough a sugar maple bowl from the beautiful blanks that were prepared.
Thanks to Johnnie Brown, chairman of the event, for the planning, to Tom for hosting the event and to the group of “young fellows” who prepared the blanks. Also, thanks to the “instructors” for sharing their expertise during the day.
A good time was had by all at this always popular TVW event.

JIG & TEMPLATE WORKSHOP

The “Jig & Template” workshop, planned by Paul Fults, was held on June 26th. The workshop was hosted by Mat Brothers. Those attending shared their special jigs and fixtures, explaining how they were used. You can always learn something and pick up a pointer or two at these activities.

"STILL SHOOTING WOODWORKERS"

We are still “missing” a few member photos and would like to add to the club’s collection. This is a good way to get to know the club members. If you have not had your photo taken, we will again be taking photos at the July meeting. We will continue to add “member photos”, as we add new members.

CARVER'S CORNER

The carvers met on July 3rd at Phil Bishop's shop. About ten people were in attendance. Some of the group continued working on “Building Native American Flutes”, while others worked on individual projects and the new “Totem Pole” that is underway.

JUNE MEETING SHOW AND TELL:

If you don't remember what the "Show & Tell items looked like or who showed them -- "click" on the name or item and take a look.

Loyd Ackerman brought in pictures of his latest project. Loyd built 2 box beams with the top made from ½” MDF, gluing gussets every 8 inches in the beam.  These beams along with saw horses make a sturdy support for a work table that is flat, light and easy to put up and take down.

Bob Addington brought in five hollow vessels he turned.  One was apple, two were from box elder, one plum and one peach. The finish was wipe-on poly.

Kevin Deuermeyer displayed two toy vehicles he made from Jack Daniels oak staves.  One was a truck and the other a coupe.

Jay Hazel brought in a bowl he turned form a piece of wood he found on the road.  He calls this wood road kill.  Jay also brought a red cedar bowl he turned, which came from the Stones River Battle Field. Jay also discussed the lapping of two planes he had “reconditioned”.

Scott Short displayed a football he turned from plans he found on the internet. The ball has 13 laces made from maple. He also displayed a Native American flute that he built.

Ralph Hand brought in a walnut and cherry chest. The walnut chest ends were made from highly figured wide boards.  The top was made from cherry with walnut banding.

Jim Everett (artist in wood) brought in a small table he made from cedar and finished with a new Minwax exterior finish. He also brought in three Intarsia "pictures" he made using wood from red cedar, eastern red cedar and western red cedar.  The pictures were of a mule, a horse, and a Bible.

Jack Rowe brought in two "goblets" and a baby rattle made from spalted bradford pear.  He also displayed a broken file that he used to make a bead cutting turning tool.

SHOP TIP

---------------Find Those Hidden Biscuits-------------

After marking and installing biscuit joints in several boards that you are gluing up edge-to-edge, then you are ready to plane the glue-up to thickness and rip it to finished width.

The problem is that, in the process, you will also remove the marks that show where the biscuits are located. Later, when crosscutting the glue-up to length, you do not want to take the chance of cutting through one of the biscuits – which would leave a very unattractive edge on your project.

Try this approach to find out where those hidden biscuits are located. Grab your electronic stud finder and run it along the glue-up seam. To your surprise, you can locate every biscuit along the board.

Now, you don’t ever have to guess!

"DO IT YOURSELF" HELP SITE

This is an interesting web site for all you "do-it-yourselfers". The site has nothing to do with woodworking, but can tell you a lot about trouble-shooting and repairing your appliances. The main feature is the "Ask the Repair Guru" section. If you have a repair problem, click here to find the answer to your problem.

LINKS AND CONTACTS ----- NEW LINKS HAVE BEEN ADDED
(TAKE A LOOK)

Take a look at the new listing of Links and Contacts on our web page. To view the section, click on LINKS AND CONTACTS.  The listing contains lots of information to help you in your woodworking "adventures".

If you find a place to purchase something pertaining to woodworking and would like to share that information with others, send an email to Loyd Ackerman with the details for inclusion.  We're not trying to replace the Yellow Pages; this is just for those special items and special contacts.
Information needed is:  Name, address, phone #, and website (if they have one) of the business and what you found them.

MEMBER INFORMATION CHANGES

We strive to always keep the club membership roster listing up-to-date. If you have address, email or phone number changes, please contact Chuck Taylor (931-728-7086) or Bob Addington (931-723-2554) so that your information can be updated in our membership listings. We are making a concentrated effort to keep our membership information current.

LOOKING FORWARD TO  YOU AT OUR NEXT MEETING
