DECEMBER PROGRAM
Our December program is the annual “GIANT SHOW & TELL”. This is your chance to bring those “special” items that you are so proud of and those “not so special” learning experiences that may not have turned out exactly as you planned. This is the time for you to share your woodworking “adventures” with the rest of the club.
If you’re new to the Club or a visitor, here is how it works. Instead of a regular show and tell in which several members bring an item, we encourage EVERYONE to bring something to show. If you don’t have a current favorite project to share, bring an item from the past; maybe the first thing you ever built or something you built years ago but that you really enjoyed doing. Or you could bring an interesting tool or something someone gave you.
You get the idea! If, on the other hand, you’d just rather not bring something, that’s OK, too. You can just come, enjoy the meeting, and join in the applause from the membership.
Come and join the fun on December
15th.

TVW
NEWS AND NOTES
TVW CHRISTMAS PARTY
The annual Christmas Party was held at the Church of the Nazarene in Decherd on Friday December 4th. It was one of the largest crowds, with more than 80 people in attendance. If you did not attend, you missed a really great party.
A big thanks to LaDoris Ackerman, chairperson, and her team for doing a wonderful job coordinating the dinner and decorating for the event. The food was great, the decorations were beautiful, all the gifts were wonderful and the fellowship was special.
The “2009 In Review” slide show was very interesting. Thanks to Loyd for putting it together.
The singing, led by Richard Gulley, was great, as usual. A good time was had by all attendees.
CARVER'S CORNER
The Carvers held their regular monthly meeting on December 5th with 11 “eager” carvers participating. They met at Phil Bishops' shop and worked on individual projects.
They also discussed having a lady from Petersburg hold a class. The class will be open to all the woodworkers and the tentative location will be at Phil Bishops or Steve Shores. Steve is handling the details.
Allen Odel brought his new woodburner, which led to a discussion about a class on woodburning, which may be scheduled next year.
The next meeting of the carvers is scheduled for January 9th, due to the holidays. Additional information will be announced at the next monthly club meeting.
UTSI NEEDS YOUR HELP
UTSI was in need of 2 new podiums.
They will supply the materials, but they would like our Club to design/build
them. More information concerning this activity will be given at our next
meeting.

Loyd Ackerman displayed an amazing collection of segmented vessels, which will be given as Christmas gifts.

"DO IT YOURSELF" HELP
SITE
This is an interesting web site for all you "do-it-yourselfers". The site has nothing to do with woodworking, but can tell you a lot about trouble-shooting and repairing your appliances. The main feature is the "Ask the Repair Guru" section. If you have a repair problem, click here to find the answer to your problem.
WOODWORKER'S HUMOR
WOODWORKING TIP OF THE MONTH
Magnetic Stop Block
When cross-cutting short pieces to the same length, it is a good idea to clamp a stop block to the rip fence of your table saw. This block provides clearance between the rip fence and the saw blade so the cut-off pieces don’t get trapped (and kick back).
Here is an idea that avoids the hassle of fiddling around with clamps. Instead, use a magnetic stop block. It’s just a hardwood block with a pair of small magnetic catches inserted into one edge, see drawing below.
Note: If the face of your rip fence is wood or aluminum, simply put the magnetic catches in the bottom face of the stop block.
The magnets hold the stop block securely against the fence. And when you are done, simply store the block out of the way on the side of the saw cabinet.
