SPECIAL OCTOBER PROGRAM

Be sure to come to the Club meeting on October 20.  This is the program you've been waiting for; good information and free samples.  Program coordinator, Anthony Watts, has arranged for representatives of the Delta, Porter Cable, and Dewalt brands of the Black & Decker Corporation to present the program at the October 20th meeting of the Club.  The program managers for sanders, routers, table saws, band saws, dust collectors, and portable vacuums for all three brands will be at the meeting.

The program will be an interactive one with the company program managers getting a firsthand experience with woodworkers and our Club members seeing the latest products and providing feedback on your likes and dislikes.

In addition to the woodworking equipment they'll be demonstrating, they will be bringing along gifts including several tools in the $50 to $200 range, as well as t-shirts and caps, to be given as door prizes to Club members present at the meeting.

Don't miss this meeting folks.  Obviously this company wishes to have your input into their design process and judging from the design features of their newest Unisaw, they are solving a lot of the problems we've complained about in the past.

See you on the 20th.

"DO IT YOURSELF" HELP SITE

This is an interesting web site for all you "do-it-yourselfers". The site has nothing to do with woodworking, but can tell you a lot about trouble-shooting and repairing your appliances. The main feature is the "Ask the Repair Guru" section. If you have a repair problem, click here to find the answer to your problem.

WOODWORKER'S HUMOR

WOODWORKING TIP OF THE MONTH

Safely planing stock to thin dimensions

Attempting to run thin pieces of stock--less than 1/2" thick--through a self-feed planer often fails because the stock breaks up as it passes under the blades.

Select a flat auxiliary board at least as wide as and 1" longer than the thin stock. Pass this board through the planer to make it a uniform thickness. Then, put cloth-backed double-faced tape between the finished side of the workpiece and the thin stock. Press this assembly firmly together in a bench vise for good adhesion. With this technique, you can plane stock down to 1/16" or less. Remember to always plane with the grain of thin pieces to avoid tearout. If possible, slow the feed rate as well. Be sure to let one end of the stock exceed the tape's length by 1/2" so you can insert a putty knife to gently pry it off the board. If the piece resists prying, dissolve the tape adhesive with lacquer thinner.
