AUGUST PROGRAM

Our August program will be presented by Henry Davis, with assistance from Bob Reese. The presentation topic will be hand planes and will provide historical and practical information. Henry has a collection of hand planes with a story to match.

A discussion on hand planes would be incomplete without addressing the topic of sharpening. With this in mind, Henry has arranged for Bob Reese to demonstrate sharpening a plane iron.

This will be an interesting and informative program. Come and hear what Henry and Bob have to say.

FALL SEMINAR
(CIRCLE THE DATE ON YOUR CALENDAR)

The Fall Seminar is shaping up as one of the best ever. The date is Saturday October 24. The presenter is furniture maker Ronnie Young. Ronnie will be covering all phases of “table construction”. He will present the seminar on making a special table. Social time begins 8 AM; program starts at 8:30 AM and runs until 3:30 PM. The program will cover making a table and will begin with a completed table, and then the presenter will discuss and demonstrate the many steps involved. The steps will include planning, lumber selection, grain consideration, lumber preparation, joinery, turnings, inlays, and finishing.

You will get to see the actual parts fabricated, as they are discussed and the completed table, used at the start of the program, will be given as a door prize at the conclusion of the program.

The event will be at Matt Brothers' shop at 248 Walnut Grove, Pelham, TN. The program chairman for this event is Johnnie Brown.

The cost is $45 for advance reservation or $50 at the door; including a continental breakfast and lunch. Attendance will be limited to the first 40 people who register, due to the fact that the program will be conducted in a working shop.

Mark the date on your calendars and plan to attend.

CARVER'S CORNER

The Carvers held their regular monthly meeting on August 1st. Nine carvers met at Phil Bishops' shop and worked Wounded Warier canes, roosters and various other projects.

Sharon Wright gave a presentation on perspective drawing and vanishing points as they apply to carvings.

The next meeting of the carvers will be announced at the monthly club meeting.

JULY MEETING SHOW AND TELL:

Ross Roepke displayed 4 items for the “Partners in Healing” auction. They were a cherry bench, a modern table from Spanish cedar and walnut, a stylized box from Spanish cedar and poplar, and a cedar stool.  He also brought a bowl.

Tom Gillard brought pictures from one of the great lodges in Glacier National Park, including some interesting furniture.

Chuck Taylor brought a cherry memory box with an ambrosia maple top.  It had a drawer with a stop. He also displayed a pecan vase, a crab-apple bowl and vase.

Dick Wollam displayed a stylized carved Hooded Madagascar Duck from butternut, and then surprised us with an extraordinary one he had carved from scraps and then painted!

Doyle McConnell brought an oak burl bowl with a piece of white ash attached to cleverly disguise a crack.  He also had two exquisite salt and pepper sets, one from oak burl and one from spalted maple, and a pepper mill made from segmented spalted maple.

Ralph Hand brought an owl he had carved 24-25 years ago with a dremel tool. It was of walnut with sumac eyes.

Bob Leonard brought a Cottonwood bark fantasy house carving.

Ron Reimers brought 3 Indian flutes with carved totems, and then treated us to playing them.  He also had a relief carving called “My Father’s Medicine Pouch.”

Jay Hazel displayed round jewelry boxes he had made for his daughter and granddaughter that had partitions.  For the men he made dresser top organizers with change cups and cell phone holders.  He also had carved salad tongs with spring action. The tongs were featured in the Wood Magazine - February/March 2005 - Issue 161.

Larry Dameworth displayed an “observation” beehive that he made with assistance from Ray Cole.

"DO IT YOURSELF" HELP SITE

This is an interesting web site for all you "do-it-yourselfers". The site has nothing to do with woodworking, but can tell you a lot about trouble-shooting and repairing your appliances. The main feature is the "Ask the Repair Guru" section. If you have a repair problem, click here to find the answer to your problem.

WOODWORKER'S HUMOR

WOODWORKING TIP OF THE MONTH

Trick ropin' for when the gluing gets tough

You can fiddle a lot of time away trying to clamp hexagons, octagons, or any of the other polygons you might build. A strap-type clamp is the easiest way to hold them for gluing, but what do you do if you don't have one? Get a rope. Then drill two holes (rope diameter) through two pieces of scrapwood near the ends. Thread the rope (sash cord works great) through the wood, as shown right, and tie a knot in each end. Drill a dowel hole on an edge at one end of one piece and glue in a dowel, leaving about two rope diameters of it above the surface. Now, to clamp your work, place the wooden pieces three or four thicknesses apart and cinch the rope around the work, taking in the slack at the end near the dowel. When the rope is tight, pass its end around the dowel and back under itself to make a half hitch around the dowel. Then, draw the pieces together with a C-clamp or handscrew to tighten.
