COFFEE COUNTY FAIR DEMONSTRATIONS
The Club completed another successful
series of demonstrations at the Coffee County
Fair. The event was well supported by our club
members and a good time was had by all.
There were things for everyone to do.
A special thanks to Doyle
McConnell for heading up this activity.
2009 NOMINATING COMMITTEE
APPOINTED
The 2009 nominating committee has been appointed by our Club president, Tom Gillard, Jr. The members are Tom Cowan and Henry Davis and will be presenting a slate of Club officers to serve during 2009. If they ask you to help the Club by serving as an officer for next year, please seriously consider their request. We have a very talented club and everyone learns from each other.
2009 TVW EXHIBIT
"IN THE SPIRIT OF FINE
WOODWORK"
The 2009 Exhibition, "In the Spirit of Fine Woodwork", is scheduled for the early part of May 2009 and will be held at the Tullahoma Fine Arts Center. Remember, the exhibition is for everyone who would like to show their work. That includes you.
Preliminary to the 2009 exhibition, The Club has reserved a room for a mini-exhibit at the Foothills Crafts Fair at the Coffee County Convention Center on November 7 and 8. The purpose of this event is to promote the Club's 2009 Exhibition.
The exhibit rules, entry forms and other important information are on the Club web site. You may also pick them up at the Club meetings or contact Loyd Ackerman.
We need more members involved in the exhibit activities. There is a job for everyone. Free passes to the craft show will be given to the folks who watch the exhibit for the club. If you would like to help with the exhibit, call Loyd (931-728-9952) or email him at [email protected].
CARVER'S CORNER
The carvers finished a successful demonstration at the Polly Crockett Festival held September 20 – 21.
The group met at Phil Bishop's shop on Saturday October 4th for their regular monthly meeting. The attendees worked on individual projects. They are also supporting the “Wounded Warriors” project.
Plans were discussed concerning the carver’s activities at the Webb School Art and Craft Festival on October 18 & 19.
The next carver’s meeting date and location will be
announced at our October meeting.
SHOP TOURS
We had a great shop tour last month. Thanks to Tom Gillard, Jr. and Ralph Hand for allowing us to visit their shops.
Saturday October 25th will be our second shop tour of the year. This tour will be a little different than most. We will be touring the “lumber piles” of Milner Carden.
The group will meet at the Western Sizzler at 8:00 Saturday morning, October 25. We will then go to Milner Carden's for the tour and discussion.
Milner and Jim will discuss and demonstrate the proper stacking, storage and care of freshly sawn lumber. It is certain that we will be in for a treat. The Carden brothers have been in the lumber business for years and I am sure they have made all the mistakes. Come on and join us and take advantage of these years of experience.
If you are interested in being a “host” on the Shop Tour schedule this year, please contact Doyle. Or, if you do not watch it, Doyle will be contacting you.
SHARPENING ANYONE??
Bob Reese is still running his "special" training class.
If you are interested in knowing more about sharpening techniques, especially turning gouges, this is one of your great opportunities. Bob Reese will give you one-on-one training. All you have to do is contact Bob and set up a time for your training. You can contact Bob by phone (931-728-7974) or by email ([email protected]).

SEPTEMBER SHOW AND TELL:
Bob Leonard brought a device to hold items while they are being carved.
Loyd Ackerman displayed two bowls he turned and donated to the annual UTSI employee’s picnic for door prizes.
Ralph Hand brought a curved top, or camel back, trunk he had made of local white pine with walnut trim, hinges, handles, and latch.
Bob Molloy brought a sample leg he had made on his Legacy CNC machine. He also had a book “press”. Another interesting thing he brought was some bellows he made of walnut that had carving on it.
Ross Roepke brought and discussed some very unique boxes. He used combinations of woods and unusual style hinging on one. He also made a stylized clock from some ½ moons of mahogany.
Jay Hazel displayed a cherry box he had made for his GPS. It was of cherry, and had an inlay on top of a compass rose.
Scott Short showed a segmented bowl which had won first place at the Franklin County Fair.
John Wendling brought his father’s old (around 1908) Lufkin folding measuring tool #386.
Felix Rees made a two-sided glass display case for a dollar bill which had been given to a homeless lady in Tullahoma.
Ed White brought a turned corn cob that he had made at the fair the previous night.
Dick Wollam brought a box elder bowl that he roughed at the latest turning bee. He also made a plate from butternut and discussed his problem with warpage. He also brought a walnut imagination turned bowl and a walnut candle holder.
Chuck Taylor discussed a “closet stool” he just competed. It had two upholstered steps and was made from cherry with appliqués placed on the sides and back
Josef Maierbacker brought a very interesting pitch fork made from one piece of either stem and roots or stem and branches. It came from a neighbor’s house, and he thinks it supposedly came from Spain.
The Cigar
Store Indian was on display at the meeting. the carving won a blue
ribbon at the Franklin County Fair.
FREE WOODWORKING PLANS
Everyone loves FREE woodworking plans. And to give woodworkers more of exactly what they are looking for, WOOD magazine has created a free downloadable plans section within the WOOD Store with nine detailed plans. Current offerings include plans for a tambour bookcase, three lumber storage projects, planter, swinging dragon toy, salt and pepper shakers, turned floral display, and scroll saw and intarsia projects. To download these free plans simply click on the following link.
Also, check out the Wood magazine free video section on various woodworking techniques. You can access the videos by clicking here. Try them out. They change each month.
WOODWORKER HUMOR
WOODWORKING TIPS
Catch telltale glue spots before they tattle.............
Too often, you don't see spots of glue film on your project until after you've started to apply the stain or finish.
Expose glue smears by wiping all joints and adjacent areas with mineral spirits or lacquer thinner. The glue smears will remain light-colored but the surrounding wood will darken. Be careful not to soak the wood with solvent.
LINKS AND CONTACTS
We are trying to start a new service for club members. Your VP, Anthony Watts, has requested that we add some key local suppliers to the website to help members find items needed in the shop; for example: belts and pulleys.
To accomplish this, we've changed the table of contents
at the left and top of the home page from LINKS to
LINKS
AND CONTACTS. We will, from time to time, add information
on the Links and Contacts page based on members inputs. If you find
a place to purchase something pertaining to woodworking and would like
to share that information with others, send an email to Loyd
Ackerman with the details for inclusion. We're not trying to
replace the Yellow Pages; this is just for
those special items and special contacts.
Information needed is: Name,
address, phone #, and website (if they have one) of the business and what
you found them.
