TVW
NEWS AND NOTES
2009 NOMINATING COMMITTEE APPOINTED
The 2009 nominating committee
has been appointed by our Club president, Tom Gillard, Jr. The members
are Tom Cowan
and Henry Davis
and they will be presenting a slate of Club officers to serve during 2009.
We have a very talented club and everyone learns from each other. If they
ask you to help the Club by serving as an officer for next year, please
seriously consider their request.
2009 TVW EXHIBIT
"IN THE SPIRIT OF FINE
WOODWORK"
The 2009 Exhibition, "In the Spirit of Fine Woodwork", is scheduled for the early part of May 2009 and will be held at the Tullahoma Fine Arts Center. Remember, the exhibition is for everyone who would like to show their work. That includes you.
Preliminary to the 2009 exhibition, The Club has reserved a room for a mini-exhibit at the Foothills Crafts Fair at the Coffee County Convention Center on November 7 and 8. The purpose of this event is to promote the Club's 2009 Exhibition.
The exhibit rules, entry forms and other important information are on the Club web site. You may also pick them up at the Club meetings or contact Loyd Ackerman.
We need more members involved in the exhibit activities. There is a job for everyone. Free passes to the craft show will be given to the folks who watch the exhibit for the club. If you would like to help with the exhibit, call Loyd (931-728-9952) or email him at [email protected].
CARVER'S CORNER
The Carvers met at Phil Bishop’s Shop on Saturday September 6 for some “carving time”. Members worked on the canes for the “Wounded Warriors” project and did some finishing work on the “Cigar Store Indian”.
The carvers held an exhibit at the Franklin County Fair September 9-13.
Plans were made to display their work and demonstrate carving techniques during the Winchester Polly Crocket Days, September 20-21 and the Webb School Art and Craft Festival in October. All Club members are welcome to participate and provide demonstrations of their woodworking skills at these activities
The next carver’s meeting date and location will be announced at our September meeting.
SHOP TOURS
Saturday September 27th will be our first shop tour.
The tour will include Tom Gillard’s shop and then Ralph Hand’s shop. Tom
has a professional woodworker’s shop, and Ralph says his is “unique.”
Doyle McConnell will give more details at our September meeting.
If you are interested in being a “host” on the Shop
Tour schedule this year, please contact Doyle.
A good excuse to clean the shop!!!!!!
SHARPENING ANYONE??
If you are interested in knowing more about sharpening techniques, especially turning gouges, this is one of your great opportunities. Bob Reese will give you one-on-one training. All you have to do is contact Bob and set up a time for your training. You can contact Bob by phone (931-728-7974) or by email ([email protected]).
COFFEE COUNTY FAIR DEMONSTRATIONS
Message for new members: This is a Club affair which just happens to be during the Fair week. Everyone in the Club is invited. We have a good time demonstrating, exhibiting and stuff like that. Come on out and help us do it and enjoy the experience. If you go to the second gate and tell them you're part of the woodworking exhibit, you won't have to pay to get in. Contact Doyle McConnell with questions.
“TURN FOR THE TROOPS” PROGRAM

AUGUST SHOW AND TELL:
Henry Davis displayed a shadow box frame he had made
Ross Roepke had two beautiful jewelry boxes. One was made out of poplar crown molding stained to look like cherry. The second box had a double book faced top of walnut.
Bob Molloy brought and discussed a hand-made jig for making sunbursts or fans with a router. He had made a box with a sun medallion on top.
Doyle McConnell displayed the third in a series of vases he turned out of maple and then dyed by squirting the dye inside the vase. He also had a beautiful large vessel with a threaded lid. Both were finished with a lacquer high-gloss finish.
Loyd Ackerman discussed examples of bonding veneer first with glue and the vacuum press, and then with Titebond III and an iron.
Dave Whyte brought three curvy band-saw boxes with drawers, made of quarter-sawn oak with walnut handles
Scott Short brought two walnut bowls. One was round and the other was square. Both were finished with paste wax.
Bob Reese used techniques learned at Ronnie Young’s seminar on inlay and made a walnut jewelry box with string inlay of holly and sycamore fans.
Gary Runyon displayed a bowl he turned out of Osage orange. He also had two shuttles he had carved out of walnut for his wife’s weaving. Gary also brought along 2 DVDs from Japanesetools.com on hand planes and sharpening.
Stephen Savelle brought and discussed a glass-enclosed display table, he made from a walnut bread box they had bought in Europe.
Bob Addington brought a multi-armed plant stand that he thinks could be also used for the exhibition. It was made from oak with a polyurethane finish.
Will Gaetjens brought a meat plunger he made for his Grandmother’s meat grinder. It was made of laminated oak and walnut.
Felix Rees brought a quilt stand he made for his daughter from wood his Dad had saved. Felix had also turned a bushing out of wood to replace one that broke on his router which they no longer made
Paul Jalbert had done a relief carving of a caricature moose surrounded by a rope.
Karen Browning brought a couple of bowls she had made in the past.
Dick Wollam brought a box of chisels to give away.
FREE WOODWORKING PLANS
Everyone loves FREE woodworking plans. And to give woodworkers more of exactly what they are looking for, WOOD magazine has created a free downloadable plans section within the WOOD Store with nine detailed plans. Current offerings include plans for a tambour bookcase, three lumber storage projects, planter, swinging dragon toy, salt and pepper shakers, turned floral display, and scroll saw and intarsia projects. To download these free plans simply click on the following link.
Also, check out the Wood magazine free video section on various woodworking techniques. You can access the videos by clicking here. Try them out. They change each month.

WOODWORKING TIPS
Attempting to run thin pieces of stock--less than 1/2" thick--through a self-feed planer often fails because the stock breaks up as it passes under the blades.............
Select a flat auxiliary board at least as wide as and 1" longer than the thin stock. Pass this board through the planer to make it a uniform thickness. Then, put cloth-backed double-faced tape between the finished side of the workpiece and the thin stock. Press this assembly firmly together in a bench vise for good adhesion. With this technique, you can plane stock down to 1/16" or less. Remember to always plane with the grain of thin pieces to avoid tearout. If possible, slow the feed rate as well. Be sure to let one end of the stock exceed the tape's length by 1/2" so you can insert a putty knife to gently pry it off the board. If the piece resists prying, dissolve the tape adhesive with lacquer thinner.
LINKS AND CONTACTS
We are trying to start a new service for club members. Your VP, Anthony Watts, has requested that we add some key local suppliers to the website to help members find items needed in the shop; for example: belts and pulleys.
To accomplish this, we've changed the table of contents
at the left and top of the home page from LINKS to
LINKS
AND CONTACTS. We will, from time to time, add information
on the Links and Contacts page based on members inputs. If you find
a place to purchase something pertaining to woodworking and would like
to share that information with others, send an email to Loyd
Ackerman with the details for inclusion. We're not trying to
replace the Yellow Pages; this is just for
those special items and special contacts.
Information needed is: Name,
address, phone #, and website (if they have one) of the business and what
you found them.
