The January program will be presented by Precision Blade and Tool from Morrison, TN.  The owner, Doug Walston, has arranged for Lenox Tools to do a program on their woodworking products.  The last time Doug had Lenox present a program to the club, it was a smashing success. The Carvers met on Saturday January 5th. Jim Wright and Steve Shores presented a workshop on the techniques of “bark carving”. The 20 carvers present worked on carving cottonwood bark. Most carved some kind of a house, however some carved lighthouses. Jim and Steve also demonstrated roofs, shingles, rocks, steps and probably some other things.

The next Carvers’ meeting will be on February 2nd.

Thousands of Dewalt cordless drills have been recalled. The 350,000 drills have a trigger switch that can overheat, causing a fire hazard. The drills were sold from June 2006 through December 2007. The affected model numbers are DC920, 930, 936, 940.

We are trying to start a new service for club members. Your VP, Anthony Watts, has requested that we add some key local suppliers to the website to help members find items needed in the shop; for example:  belts and pulleys.

To accomplish this, we've changed the table of contents at the left and top of the home page from LINKS toLINKS AND CONTACTS.  We will, from time to time, add information on the Links and Contacts page based on members inputs.  If you find a place to purchase something pertaining to woodworking and would like to share that information with others, send an email to Loyd Ackerman with the details for inclusion.  We're not trying to replace the Yellow Pages; this is just for those special items and special contacts.
Information needed is:  Name, address, phone #, and website (if they have one) of the business and what you found there.

COFFEE: Felix Rees has “stepped up to the pot” and volunteered to make the coffee for the club meetings during 2008. Thanks to Felix.
Also, our appreciation is expressed to the Clarks, who made coffee during the 2007 year.

BREAK SNACKS: We still are in need of volunteers to help with the meeting “snacks”. Tom will be passing around a list for those willing to provide “break snacks” at our meetings. If you are willing to help, please be ready to sign up.
 
 

The 2007 “Show and Tell” program was one of the best we have had. Lots of people brought and discussed items they had made recently or in
"times past”. Below is a sampling of the items brought and discussed.

Jay Hazel - curly cherry greenwood bowl turned into a platter,  inside out turned Christmas tree ornament,  bowl turned from firewood,  two (2) stave bowls,  bottle stopper,  nightstand with book rack made from ash, and Beetle tongs for crushing Japanese beetles.

Allen Odell (Dec. new member) - Fish hook/trap carved from Alder based on a native design for catching Halibut; Diamond Willow walking stick.

Ken Webb – Photo frame from hickory, table with offset legs to slide under a bed and give writing space.

Bob Addington – circular crib seen in DVD and circular routing jig.

Art Brickse – folding deck rocking chair from white oak.

Jim Wright – stylized driftwood carvings (Rhino, Camel, Stork, 2 Geese)

Ralph Hand – eastern juniper (or Red Cedar) duck carving.

Anthony Watts – gave away plans and old woodworking magazines.

Dick Wollam – platter with southwestern Native American designs copied from a stamp design.

Jim Van Cleave – cherry Queen-Anne tilt-top table.

Stuart Gaetjens (Dec. new member)– child’s rocker with caned chair seat and reed basket using “underwater” technique.

Doyle McConnell – shaker peg and shaker candle hanging fixture patterned after one in Shaker Town, Kentucky.

Ken Gould – 2 carved fish, one from pine, and one from palonia, carving from walnut (frog) and Japanese carved walnut with tiny faces.

Felix Rees – finial for wife’s lamp, lamp base he turned from tulip poplar out of an old church.

Deacon Taylor – two red oak boxes with tile sides.

Milner Carden (Dec. new member) – scroll saw sled (by late member Don Helton), several wooden ties made by a guy in Alabama and carved wooden shoes.

Jim Carden – cherry pedestal bowl, solid brass turned candle holders, 50 yr old captain’s arm chair and a homemade spindle gouge.

Loyd Ackerman – broken vase turned in 1997, natural edge bowl turned in 2002 and a hinged box turned this week.

Matt Brothers and Ray Cole – mahogany dining chair and fluted legs.  Ray used a legacy milling machine to rout the legs.

Gary Runyon – sharpening system using glass impregnated with diamonds, and Japanese hand planes.

Maurice Ryan – paper towel holder, photos of clock and boxes which were recent projects.

Louis Bryant – several turned bowls, five different woods used.

Tom Gillard, Jr. – inlay belt buckle made in 1988, inlaid Cross, sailboat, boat hull, Winfield Bennett style wooden chain with router jig to make it, airfoil model, cane from laminated wood, Box for Boy Scout Eagle pin, and a clock.

Johnny Brown – several bowls, first one roughed at Tom Cowan’s workshop. Also one bowl made from an Ash tree on the courthouse square, a bowl from apple wood, and two bowls from spalted hackberry

Luke Buchanan (a young apprentice of Tom Cowan’s) – turned candle holder, shaker stool, and painted candle holder

Karen Kerce Browning – accidental urn in wire candle stand.

Jim Jollit – green man carving (human face in leaf pattern) and a nut cracker with music box.

Henry Davis – four bowls including a rough turned one for a lesson. Finished were of cherry (2) and spalted hackberry

Larry Bowers – fragmented bowl taped up (lesson learned).

Doug Dunlap – two bowls from layered dry wood.

Dave Whyte – working lathe made from walnut and several jigs to go with it.

Andy Weaver and Dean Lutz – shotgun case with box joint corners for their preacher.

Paul Jalbert – wooden back-hoe toy that a child could ride on and operate. Plans were from Popular Mechanics, May, 1981.
 
 

like to use wooden plugs to hide screws in your special projects, but tediously sanding the plugs flush with the surface around them isn't high on your list of fun things to do. Even when you saw the plugs off first, no matter how careful you are, the teeth of the saw often mar the workpiece, which means even more sanding.

Minimize both damage and sanding time by slipping a well-worn random-orbit sander disc, grit side down, over the plug, as shown below, before sawing it off. The disc protects the workpiece from the saw's teeth and leaves just the shallowest nub on the plug that sands away quickly.
