TVW NEWS AND NOTES
ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY
The annual Christmas party was held at UTSI room H111 (our regular meeting room) on Friday December 7th with about 80 members and guests attending the function.
Mary Cowan, the chairperson, and her team did a wonderful job coordinating the dinner. The food was great, the decorations were beautiful and the fellowship was special. A good time was had by all attendees.
Thanks to everyone who brought the delicious food, those who helped with the decorations and setup, and those bringing gifts. A special thanks goes to Loyd for creating the “TVW 2007 Overview” DVD presentation and to Richard Gulley for the Christmas songs.

SEGMENTED VESSEL WORKSHOP
The “Segmented Vessel” workshop was held on December 1 at UTSI and was attended by 17 people.
Thanks to Loyd Ackerman for putting the program together and presenting the material.
The attendees came away from the workshop with enough information to get in the shop and create a segmented vessel of their own.

The Carvers met on Saturday December 1st. Those present were Harry May, Jim Wright, Steve Shores, Phil Bishop, Dick Wollam, Sharron Wright, Bob Leonard, Ken Gould, Jim Van Cleave, Ken Burgess, and new member David Felix.
Some of the group worked on the “Cigar Store Indian” while others worked on individual projects.
The next meeting (January 5th) will begin at 8 AM and will be held at Jim Wright's shop. Jim and Steve Shores will demonstrate the techniques of “bark carving”. Attendees will attempt to carve houses in the bark.
Remember the carver's meeting date has changed. They now meet on the first Saturday of each month.

Jim Van Cleave brought the Queen Anne leg that he worked on at the Fall Seminar along with three matching legs he made after the Seminar.
Sharron Wright displayed her “first attempt” at scroll saw projects, bringing a “man in the moon” and “sun” ornament and discussed pens for signing your work.
Jay Hazel brought and discussed a mandolin made from “Birdseye” maple.
Geoff Roehm discussed his “work in progress” Parlor Guitar which has a western cedar top, cypress sides and a mahogany neck.
Joe Kuhn says he awarded himself the “Chump of the Year” award, due to one of his shop activities with a router. He also brought and discussed pictures of his “out feed” table and a “dolly” for transporting sheet goods.
Anthony Watts brought a Windsor High Chair he made for his daughter, Megan.
Dick Wollam displayed one of his basswood detailed carvings, a deep relief dragon that won the blue ribbon at the Huntsville art show.
Chuck Taylor showed a display case for a football autographed by Ohio State notables, a natural edge bradford pear bowl and a bowl made from mystery wood.
Ross Roepke brought two
small boxes. One using cherry molding and having a figured walnut
top. The other made from poplar, cedar, and walnut.
TOOL DEFINITIONS
CHAINSAW: The
tool used to salvage a large log which a woodworker will then use other
tools to reduce to log to shavings.
WOODWORKER'S TIP
“Here's a plug for end-grain joinery”
You hate to drive screws into end grain because they can pull right out. But sometimes, you can't avoid driving them into the end of a board, such as in the case of the bed hardware shown right.
For a strong joint, give the screw some face grain to dig into. Here's how: Drill a dowel-diameter hole through the face of the project part, located so that the screw threads will fall mostly or completely inside the hole. Then, glue a length of dowel into the hole. Set the dowels so their end grain is perpendicular to the grain on the face of the project part. Cut the ends flush with your project part. Now, drill your pilot holes and drive in the screws.
