We are saddened to inform you of the untimely death of Bob Lowrance, our club secretary. Bob died of a cerebral hemorrhage on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 in San Jose, Costa Rica. Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 17, 2007 at 10:00 A. M. at St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church in Tullahoma. A family reception will follow the services at the church.

The annual Christmas Party is scheduled for December 7 at our regular meeting room at UTSI. Mary Cowan is the chairperson for this event. She will be asking for help, so please volunteer to help Mary.

Don’t forget to bring your favorite dish for the “pot-luck” dinner.

The activities will begin at 5:00 PM with the meal beginning about 6:00.

Plan to come, enjoy the delicious food and have a good time with your fellow woodworkers.

The election of officers for next year will be held at our November meeting. The nominating committee (Henry Davis, Loyd Ackerman, Anthony Watts and Tom Gillard, Jr.) presented the following slate of officers for 2008 at our October meeting. Also, nominations may be made from the floor at the November meeting.

Our Fall Seminar, “Decorative Woodworking” was a rousing success with about 35 people in attendance. Thanks to Dan Maher for chairing the event and to Collins Roan for hosting the seminar.

A special thanks to the presenters Jim Van Cleave (Cabriole Legs), Jay Hazel (Chair Caning), Bob Reese (Sharpening techniques),  Doyle McConnell (Split Turning) and Tom Cowan (Furniture Decorating).

Our “local presenters” can certainly hold their own with other woodworking experts. The club is fortunate to have so many talented people within the group.
 
 

The carver group participated in the Webb School Arts and Crafts Festival that was held October 20 and 21 in Bell Buckle. They all had a good time at the Festival. The weather cooperated this year. It was reported that they sold the “TOTEM POLE” during the Festival.

Bob Lowrance will surely be missed in this club sub-group. He was one of the members responsible for getting the carvers’ group started.

The splinter carver’s last meeting was on November 3rd at the carving show at the Roundhouse in Huntsville.  About six carvers attended the event. Our club member’s talents were recognized with Harry May getting one ribbon; Steve Shores getting two and Dick Wollam bringing four ribbons home. Good job fellows.

The next carvers meeting will be December 1 at Phil Bishop’s shop.

Remember the carver's meeting date has changed. They now meet on the first Saturday of each month.

Due to the Memorial Services for Bob Lowrance on November 17th, the “Segmented Vessel” workshop has been rescheduled for December 1 at UTSI room H111.

The workshop will be a 4 hour session and will begin at 8:00 AM.

If you are interested in the workshop, but didn't get a chance to sign up, contact Loyd Ackerman.

You will leave the program ready to go home and make a segmented vessel of your own.
 
 

Matt Brothers brought photos of the last piece of the dining room set he has been working on. The beautiful walnut buffet has a fold-out top and a dove-tail drawer.

Crocia Robertson discussed a musical marble game.

Tom Gillard Jr. brought photos of a mahogany door that he was building and discussed the fixture he used during the finishing process. He also showed sailboats he built for a member of his “boat crew”.

Bob Leonard brought a walnut wood spirit started in a seminar years ago.

Ralph Hand showed a pine glass door cabinet with walnut trim.

Bob Addington brought a box joint jig for the table saw and a router sled for making door rails.

Doyle McConnell displayed some recipe card holders he had made for gifts.

Dick Wollam brought a detailed driftwood carving of a Lilly.

Billy May brought two carved faces in one Catawba log and a Spirit face carved in cherry.

Karen Browning brought a miniature turned bowl

Ross Roepke discussed his new power drill from Harbor Freight for $5.95.
 
 

Ever have a problem storing the leftover dowel pieces? The shorter pieces were always hard to find and never seemed to get used. Here is a solution to this problem

Build a dowel storage box you see in the drawing. It allows you to easily store a wide range of dowel lengths. That way, you can find even the smallest pieces quickly.

The storage box consists of five compartments. Four of the compartments have false bottoms so each compartment is six inches shorter than the one next to it. This stair-step arrangement allows for the different lengths of pieces. And the shallow tray in front lets stores the pieces that are too short to fit in any of the other bins.

New dowels go in the deepest bins. Then, as they’re cut off, they’re moved to the appropriate bin.

A good way to help with storage and shop cleanup.
