NEXT MAJOR TVW EVENTS

The Dogwood Festival is scheduled for April 13-15. Ken Gould is chairing this event and will be looking for plenty of help to support this spring activity. The Club will have two full booths side by side again this year.  There will be exhibits and demonstrations to draw attention to what woodworking is all about.  Carvers will have their cigar store Indian project going. Turners will be demonstrating woodturning projects.

SHOP TOURS ARE BACK

The 2007 shop tours are on. Thanks to Doyle McConnell for organizing the tour schedules. The tour will start at Dutch Maid Bakery for breakfast at 8:30 AM. The bakery is located in downtown Tracy City on highway 41 and then we will visit the Marugg Company of Tracy City, TN, which is the oldest factory in Grundy County. Then we will travel to Dean Lutes' shop.  Dean has recently expanded his shop.  This will be a very interesting tour along with the beautiful spring blooms along the way.

SPRING SEMINAR

The spring seminar has been set and Anthony Watts is the chairperson for this event. Come enjoy "Chair Making with Greg Pennington".  Greg is a skilled Windsor Style chair maker with over 100 chairs, rockers and settees made thus far.  Come watch him make a chair from start to finish on May 12 at Tom Cowan's shop.  The Seminar starts at 8 am and ends at 6 pm.  Cost is $40 per person and $45 at the door (includes lunch and take home CD with construction info).  This will be an exceptional day of learning and watching a craftsman take raw materials through to a finished chair.  If you have any questions call Anthony Watts at 455-8624 or Matt Brothers at 467-3014.

CARVER’S CORNER

The splinter carvers met at Jim Wright’s shop on March 31. The group was scheduled to begin the process of carving the “Cigar Store Indian” at this meeting and will continue the project during the Dogwood Festival. Photos from the carving sessions are posted on the club web site in the gallery section under “carver’s events”.

If you want to help with the club meeting “refreshments” you need to act fast. Only November and December slots are available. If you are interesting in helping with this activity, please contact Tom Gillard. You may call Tom at 931-393-0525 or contact him by email at [email protected] .

WOODWORKER'S TIP

"Inexpensive pipe-clamp vise"

Mount the business end of a 3/4" pipe clamp to the front of your workbench, using a cut-off floor flange and a short length of pipe, as shown in the drawing. (The top of the jaw is about 1" higher than the bench top.) Next, drill two rows of evenly spaced 3/8" holes into the bench top to accept the dog's 3/8" bolts. The bolts don't thread into these holes; they just pin the dog in place in whatever pair of holes best suits the size of the workpiece.

To distribute the clamping pressure over a wider area than the narrow face of the clamp jaw alone can provide, insert a wooden block between the jaw and the workpiece. Keep a variety of thin scraps around that don't interfere when using a power-sander on a workpiece held in the "vise."

TOOL DEFINITIONS

DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, splattering it against that freshly-stained heirloom piece you were drying.
