MEMBER NAME TAGS

WANT A TVW NAME TAG? HERE IS THE WAY TO DO IT!!!!!

Our name tags are made by K&S TROPHIES, 510 Country Club Drive, Tullahoma. They were about $5.00 including tax the last time we checked. When in Tullahoma you can go by and have one made, call them at 455-7359 or email them at [email protected]. The tags are 1" x 3" with white letters on a blue background. Just tell the folks that you want a Tennessee Valley Woodworkers name tag.   If you are never in Tullahoma, Henry Davis will be happy to take care of it for you, see him at the meeting, give him a call at 393 - 3191, or email him at [email protected]

CLUB BUSINESS CARDS

We still have club business cards available. For those who have not heard about our cards they are free to members and contain information about the club.  The cards are designed so you can sign your name if you choose.   See Henry Davis if you want a supply of cards or need to get some more.

We strive to always keep the club membership roster up to date. If you have changes to your home address, phone number or email address please let us know so we can update our membership list.  Contact Henry Davis at 931-393-3191 or [email protected]

SHOW AND TELL:

Dick Wollam displayed a detailed carving of a crappie he had created in poplar.

Tom Cowan brought and discussed the stained finish on a shallow walnut bowl. Tom was trying a water-based aniline dye on the sample before using the process on the real project.

Loyd Ackerman brought an “open” turned segmented vessel with a smaller vessel inside.

Maurice Ryan showed small jewelry boxes, one with a walnut top insert on a poplar box.

Jim Wright brought the detailed “face” carving he had started at last month’s program.

Ross Roepke displayed several small boxes. One was made of curly maple and one of cedar which was book-matched on the front, back and top. He also brought a walnut tray. He showed pictures of a queen-sized oak bed frame he made for a grandson.

Dave Whyte brought two poplar “wood art sculptures” featuring walnut handles.

Bob Lowrance brought a duck carved from white cedar.

Henry Davis displayed an adjustable weaving frame for making horse tack that he had constructed for a customer.

Gary Runyon brought and discussed the use of Belgian garnet whetstones from Perfect Edge.

Doyle McConnell brought two oak burl turned pens he had made. The pins are being shipped to Taiwan.

There was a lot of interest in the "Show & Tell" items and also the "Coffee and Goodies".

WOODWORKER'S TIP

"Trick ropin' for when the gluing gets tough"

You can fiddle a lot of time away trying to clamp hexagons, octagons, or any of the other polygons you might build. A strap-type clamp is the easiest way to hold them for gluing, but what do you do if you don't have one?

Get a rope. Then drill two holes (rope diameter) through two pieces of scrap wood near the ends. Thread the rope (sash cord works great) through the wood, as shown right, and tie a knot in each end. Drill a dowel hole on an edge at one end of one piece and glue in a dowel, leaving about two rope diameters of it above the surface. Now, to clamp your work, place the wooden pieces three or four thicknesses apart and cinch the rope around the work, taking in the slack at the end near the dowel. When the rope is tight, pass its end around the dowel and back under itself to make a half hitch around the dowel. Then, draw the pieces together with a C-clamp or handscrew to tighten.
