JUNE PROGRAM
Thanks to Wayne
Sutter of Woodline for presenting the June program. Wayne gave an interesting
presentation on bandsaws and “aftermarket” bandsaw accessories.
SHOP TIP OF THE MONTH
Put a bead in any board
A cabinet builder had a requirement for a beaded-board
look on the cabinet doors, but didn’t want to hassle with beading a solid-wood
panel. (Router bits designed for this task don’t work in the middle of
a panel.)
So, using a dado set on the tablesaw, he made his
own by cutting 1/4" grooves where he wanted the beads. After breaking the
edges of each groove, the cabinet builder glued a 1/4" dowel into each
groove. The end result: It looks just like the real McCoy. Try using this
technique with a contrasting species of dowel for visual effect.

SHOW AND TELL:
Doyle McConnell displayed a natural edge bowl made from spalted hackberry and finished with gloss lacquer and wax.
Maurice Ryan brought 2 spalted hackberry bowls, emphasizing how very different the wood can be within the same tree. The tree had been cut from property in Tullahoma where General Bragg had located his headquarters during the Civil War. The bowls had been hand rubbed with 0000 steel wool and waxed.
Bob Leonard brought the smallest item of the evening. His carving of a cowboy boot was very detailed and finished with shoe polish. Bob’s carving was done at the Spring Seminar.
Andy Weaver brought a miniature carving which he had started at the seminar. His dog had been completed and was adorned with a red necktie.
Jim Van Cleave brought his cherry silver chest, which is in the process. It is being constructed in the Queen Anne style. Yet to come will be the 3 segmented drawers to be fitted with tarnish proof clothe lining and the top tray and lid.
Bob Reese showed his adjustable lamp, constructed from walnut and finished with Danish oil. This is a reproduction of a lamp that he and Rita had seen in a store in Nashville. It will be a wedding gift for a grandchild.
Henry Davis, speaking on behalf of Tom Gillard, notified the club that there was walnut for the taking located at Tom’s shop.
Matt Brothers showed pictures of a breakfront/china cabinet he has completed with beveled glass doors, side panel inserts, glass shelves and panel doors. This is part of a dining room suit that he is in the process of making from walnut. He is finishing the furniture with Danish oil and 6 coats of lacquer.
Karen Kerce brought an old wooden “what
is it?” item, in hopes that someone in the club could identify the
piece and tell her the name of the item. If you can identify the item,
please see Karen.
