APRIL PROGRAM
The April program will be presented
by Doyle McConnell. Doyle will tell us how he makes his shell turning.
You saw his plywood bowl in the February

DOGWOOD FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES
The Dogwood Festival
for 2006 is now history. It was well supported by the club and lots of
people
stopped by the displays to see what was happening. Everything got off
to a rough start, due to the weather conditions. Thanks to Ken
Gould, Chairperson for the TVW participation, to those who set
up the areas and to those who manned the demonstration / Display areas.
Three tents and display areas
were set up for the club’s use at the Festival. The ironworkers,
turners
and carvers were performing
demonstrations during the Festival, as well as displaying samples of their
skills. The Totem Pole was of
great interest to all visitors. Everyone had a good
time despite the chilly and windy weather.

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
TENNESSEE CROSSROADS, featuring the wooden toy collection of Crocia Roberson, will air on April 13 at 7:00 PM and again on Sunday, April 16 at 10:00 AM. The Tennessee Crossroads program may be seen on PBS Channel 8.
Ross Roepke recently presented a program to a group of men living at “The Place”, a retirement home in Tullahoma. They have 8 men that tend to stay in their rooms and don't get acquainted, so they asked Ross if he would talk to them about a woodworking project. Ross chose to talk to them about small boxes that he makes for benefit auctions.
First, Ross showed some of the boxes he had made, and then took them thru the process of cutting and assembly. They were very interested and asked questions about the wood and equipment that was used.
The “Place” would like to more programs
of this type. Ross suggests that other club members, willing to participate
in this activity, contact the Recreation Director. The Recreation Director
is Billy Lambert and can be contacted by email at [email protected]
. If you prefer to call and get details on the phone, she can be reached
at 455-2000.

SHOP TIP OF THE MONTH
Leveling with a wire:
Squaring up a tilting table on a drill press so
it's perpendicular to a drill bit can prove tedious.
Instead of using a square, a small length of coat hanger
will do the job quickly and accurately. Cut a length of wire approximately
6" long, and bend right angles in it as shown. Don't worry if the angles
aren't exactly 90°. Chuck one end into the drill and tighten. Raise
the table so it touches the wire. Slowly rotate the drill chuck 180°
by hand so you can detect any high or low spots in the table.

SHOW AND TELL:
Tom Gillard displayed a laminated boat tiller, finished with Spar varnish.
Loyd Ackerman brought a segmented vase, which he had decorated with shallow relief carving.
Dick Wollam showed the design for the totem pole (12 ft. long X 15 inch dia. Butternut log) to be carved at the Dogwood Festival.
Wayne Beam showed photos of a sofa table he had made.
Dean Lutes brought a door from a set of cabinets he was making from “reclaimed” lumber and will be installed in a log cabin.
Andy Weaver passes
out a survey sheet concerning the Spring Seminar. The results will be used
to help set the Spring Seminar program.
