SPLINTERS.....
OCTOBER. 1993
Once again a hearty
welcome to ~October’s Bright Blue
Weather”. The joys of Fall are many: getting behind those poky old school
busses again;raking after another one of those endless blizzards of leaves;
just contemplating another load of firewood; then there are always the joys of
clearing gutters and gardens. counting
our blessings. Soon Mother Nature will once again reveal those secrets once
carefully guarded beneath her cloak of summer foilage...Fall and Winter rides
always seen, a little more interesting.
Here’s a little puzzler
that might challenge a few of our members that pride themselves on the category
“Wood and its uses”. Many of the coal mines in the Eastern U.S. prefer Tulip
Poplar for bracing and shoring mines even though other stronger woods are
readily available. For the title of Expert of Experts or Master of Wood Trivia
you must correctly answer the question..WHY??? Just to put us all on a level
playing field..Tulip poplar is also referred to as Yellow Poplar of course most
of you are more accustomed to the botanical Latin reference to the
species..Liriodendrot, tulipifera. All responses will be held in the strictest
confidtnce and seemed in the trusted mayonnaise jar.
Just a reminder about
power tools...Tools That are NOT double insulated will have THREE prongs. The longer round prong is for your safety.
When plugged into a mating Three prong receptacle it serves to connect the tool
body to the electrical safety. When
plugged in without this important safety connection YOUR BODY serves as the
path for
Electricity
to return to ground..especially under damp conditions. If you are using an
extension cord make sure it has a functioning three prong end, If you must use
an adapter ..rnake sure your green
wire is connected to an electrical ground.
Ross has, once again, arranged an
interesting evening for the members and fiends of the Tennessee Valley
Woodworkers. Our program, Tuesday evening, will be on Design, Form, and Function. Christine Teasley of St.
Andrtws/Sewanee will be our speaker. She will speak not only of furniture
design but the form and function of other objects. Christine will have a slide
presentation which will make the evening even more desirable. Put the third Tuesday
on your list right now.
Judy want to remind everyone that she
will have coffee, doughnuts, and sausage and biscuits for breakfast on the
morning of the sixth. If have not committed to attending the seminar by the
