TENNESSEE VALLEY WOODWORKERS SEPT. ‘91
SPLINTERS
WELL
HERE WE ARE NEARING THE “FALL OF FALL”. SPEAKING OF FALL...HOW DID I GET
ELECTED TO THE TOP BUNK ANYWAY??? PHIL BISHOP. HENRY DAVIS. TOM COWAN AND I
SPENT A VERY ENJOYABLE
WEEKEND
AT THE WOOD TURNING SEMINAR IN SMITHVILLE. IF YOU’VE GOT THE TIME, JUST ASK ONE
OF US IF WE ENJOYED IT! THE TOP BUNK IS BAD ENOUGH, BUT A TOP BUNK FULL OF
GRAVEL IS ABSOLUTE ABUSE. TOM AND HENRY GAVE NEW MEANING TO “ROCK—A—BYE
BABY”... SOME FOLKS JUST KNOW HOW TO HAVE FUN AT OTHER PEOPLE’ S EXPENSE.
AUGUST
MEETING
WE
HAD A BIG CROWD FOR THE DOG DAYS MEETING AND EVEN SIGNED UP A NEW MEMBER,
LEONARD JACKSON. GLAD TO HAVE YOU WITH US, LEONARD.
PHIL
WANTS TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT THE FRANKLIN COUNTY ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW IS THE
WEEKEND. SEPT. 14 AND 15 AT THE DOMINION BANK IN DECHERD. WE’VE GOT THE SAME
FOUR SPOTS AND SET UP IS ANY TIME FRIDAY OF VERY EARLY SATURDAY.
OLD
TIMEY DAY IS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, S0 MARK YOUR CALENDAR AND
THINK
OF A WAY TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS ACTIVITY. WE GET A GREAT
DEAL
OF RECOGNITION FROM PARTICIPATING IN THIS YEARLY EVENT.
HENRY
DAVIS RECOMMENDED A GREAT IDEA FOR OUR TOYS FOR TOTS
PROGRAM
SINCE INTEREST HAS BEEN WANING OVER THE YEARS. HE
SUGGESTED
THAT WE ALL GET TOGETHER AND WORK IN ONE SHOP AS SORT
OF
A PRODUCTION LINE. THOSE’ THAT CAN
BUILD CAN BUILD, THOSE OF
US
WHO CAN’T CAN SAND AND FINISH. IF TOM
GETS HIS SHOP ADDITION
FINISHED,
YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO SET UP SANTA’S WORKSHOP AT
THE
CHURCHES.
SHOW
AND TELL-—--STAND BACK JACK, THE CLOCK COMPETITION GETS
TIGHTER
EVERY DAY. TOM GILLARD BROUGHT A SLAB CLOCK TO SHOW MR.
MAN
WHO MAKES CLOCKS THAT RUN BACKWARDS. HENRY DAVIS HAS A NEW
TOY
THAT LOOKED MORE LIKE THE JAWS OF LIFE TO ME. I THINK IT WAS
A
CHUG FOR A LATHE. ROY FARMER, SHOWED A PIECE OF WOOD AND STRAW
ART
THAT HE OBTAINED BY WHAT TOM CALLS THE SUSAN METHOD, OF “OH,
ISN’T
THAT PRETTY”. JACK SAYS HIS CLOCK THAT
RUNS BACKWARDS
MAKES
YOU FEEL YOUNGER. WINFIELD HAS BEEN CARVING ON SOME OF
PHIL’S
BASSWOOD AND I’M GOING TO BUY SOME OF PHIL’S WOOD IF IT
TURNS
OUT LIKE THAT. THAT IS YOUR SECRET, ISN’T IT, WINFIELD?
. FRED HELTSLEY MADE A BOX FOR HIS WIFE
TO DISPLAY HER NEEDLEWORK. ROSS SAID HE BROUGHT SOME JIGS TO SHOW. BUT THEY
LOOKED MORE LIKE INVENTIONS TO ME. A SCIENTIST IN OUR MIDST, PERHAPS?
RICHARD
GULLEY, WHO WILL NEVER MISS ANOTHER MEETING, HAS BEEN
VISITING
PAWN SHOPS AGAIN AND GAINED A NEW TOOL. TOM COWAN HAS
BEEN
WORKING IN HIS LABORATORY MIXING WALNUT AND BOX ELDER. NOW
FOLKS
OVER HIS WAY KNOW WHAT THAT STRANGE ODOR IS. JIM VAN
CLEEVE.
OUR EDITOR AT LARGE, BUILT A CHEST OF DRAWERS FOR HIS
UNDERWEAR
AND SOCKS. SOMETHING HIS WIFE TRIED TO GET HIM TO DO
FOR
A VERY LONG TIME, SO THERE’S HOPE LADIES. AND FOLKS. WE HAD
AN
ENDING THAT WAS TO BE ENVIED BY ALL ORGANIZATIONS, RICHARD
HAGAR
BROUGHT THREE LOVELY DULCIMERS TO SHOW AND WASN’T AWARE OF
OUR
TRADITION OF “YOU BRING AN INSTRUMENT TO SHOW. YOU PLAY IT”. SO WE ENDED THE
EVENING WITH FINE ENTERTAINMENT.
JIM
VAN CLEEVE FINISHED OUT THE EVENING WITH A FINE PROGRAM ON
CABINET
SCRAPERS. WE SURE APPRECIATE PEOPLE LIKE JIM WHO IN ONE
MONTH
TOOK OVER THE NEWSLEITER AND GAVE A PROGRAM TO BOOT.
THANKS.

SAYS
THAT CALVIN IS A REAL NATURALIST AND KNOWS A GREAT DEAL
ABOUT
THE NATIVE WOODS OF TENNESSEE. SO THIS SHOULD BE AN
INFORMATIVE
AND INTERESTING MEETING. LETS MAKE SURE WE HAVE A
BIG
TURNOUT, IT’S BACK TO SCHOOL TIME FOLKS. AND WE HAVE LOTS TO
