TENNESSEE VALLEY WOODWORKERS MAY
1991
ALL
OF YOU FELLOW WOODWORKERS BETTER START CONSIDERING FINDING
YOUR
OLD ARK PLANS... IF YOU NOAH WHAT I MEAN. INSTEAD OF MAY
FLOWERS
BROUGHT BY APRIL SHOWERS ... I THINK WE CAN ONLY LOOK TO
JUNE
MOSQUITOES. IT HAS TRULY BEEN AN INUNDATION SITUATION. IN
SPITE
OF ALL THE RAIN THIS SPRING SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN PARTICULARLY
BEAUTIFUL..
.THE IRISESSESS HAVE GRACED US WITH THEIR BLOOMS FOR
AN
EXTENDED TIME THIS YEAR. I’M SURE THAT SOME OF YOU MAY BE
THINKING
THAT YOU MAY HAVE MISSED THE MAY NEWSLETTER. . .FEAR NOT
OH
YEA OF LITTLE FAITH... IT WORKS OUT THAT THIS IS ABOUT AS LATE
AS
YOU CAN HAVE A THIRD TUESDAY WITH OUT BREAKING THE LAWS
OF
GRAVITY. YES THIRD TUESDAY FALLS ON THE 21ST THIS MONTH.
APRIL
MEETING
WE
HAD A GOOD CROWD AND WE STARTED WITH SHOW AND TELL AND SAVED
THE
BEST FOR LAST. MOST OF ALL WE HEARD TESTIMONIALS FROM THOSE
WHO
HAD ATTENDED THE ATLANTA SHOW. HENRY SHOWED SOME CLAMPS THAT
HE
BOUGHT THAT LOOKED LIKE GARBAGE TIES. HE SAID THEY WORKED
GREAT
ON ROUND OBJECTS AND HE PURCHASED THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE
CHEAPER
THAN A HOT DOG. TOM GILLARD FIXED THREE PLANES FOR A
FRIEND
OF HIS AND GOT TO KEEP ONE. DEALS JUST DON’T GET ANY
BETTER
THAN THAT, FOLKS. TOM PUT SOME FINE HANDLES ON THOSE
PLANES.
RICHARD GULLEY HAD A DURN URN OR ANOTHER BOWL WITH
FEETS,
WHICHEVER YOU PREFERRED. I DON’T REMEMBER WHO IT WAS BUT
SOMEONE
TRIED THAT MAGIC DISC THAT SEVERAL PURCHASED IN ATLANTA
AND
SAID IT WAS LIKE USING A “SIDE GRINDER WITH A CHAIN SAW
BLADE.”
TOM COWAN HAD A VASE MADE FROM BLEACHED BOX ELDER AND
INFORMED
US THAT YOU HAVE TO BUY WOOD BLEACH TO ATTEMPT THIS
TRICK.
TOM
CHURCH SHOWED A JAPANESE TOOTHPICK THAT HE GOT IN A JAPANESE
RESTAURANT
. IT LOOKED LIKE IT HAD BEEN TURNED AND RICHARD SAID
HE’S
MADE LOTS OF THOSE WHEN HE STARTS TO TURN A BOWL.
SHOW
AND TELL IS ALWAYS FUN FOLKS AND REMEMBER TO BRING SOMETHING
EACH
MONTH. A TOOL, OR ITEM YOU MADE, OR SOMETHING YOU HAVE
PURCHASED
THAT MIGHT BE OF INTEREST TO WOODWORKERS.
THE
HIGHLIGHT OF THE APRIL MEETING
WE
WERE ALL DELIGHTED TO HEAR MR. CHARLES ALVIS FROM THE
TENNESSEE
ASSOCIATION OF WOODTURNERS. IF ALL YOU GOT TO DO WAS
SEE
WHAT HE BROUGHT WITH HIM, YOU HAD A FINE EVENING. BUT, MR.
ALVIS
ALSO SHARED SOME KNOWLEDGE OF WOOD AND IDEAS ABOUT TURNING.
HE
SAID HE FELT AWKWARD STANDING IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE WITHOUT
HIS
LATHE, BUT HE SURE PUT ON AN EXCELLENT PROGRAM. HE ENDED
WITH
A NICE LITTLE THOUGHT, THAT THOSE OF YOU WHO MISSED THE
MEETING
MIGHT ENJOY. HE SAID THAT TREES WERE NOT MADE FOR US.
THAT
THEY WERE MADE TO HOLD UP LIMBS. GROW THINGS, AND PURIFY THE
AIR.
SO ONCE YOU MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF A TREE, IT SHOULD BE AN
APPLAUSE
FOR A TREE.
EXAM TIME
LET’S SEE HOW CLOSE YOU WERE
PAYING ATTENTION LAST MEETING
HERE’S A LITTLE QUIZ TO WORK
