TENNESSEE
VALLEY WOODWORKERS APRIL ‘91
YES,
THAT AGE OLD ADAGE “APRIL SHOWERS BRINGS MAY FLOWERS” IS
PROVING
ITSELF PARTICULARLY TRUE THIS YEAR! I! THUS FAR WE
CERTAINL
Y HAVE HAD ONE GLORIOUS SPRING! MOTHER NATURE’S SPRING
GREENS
ARE UNPARALLELED... UNEXCELLED BY EVEN THE MUCH ENVIED
COLOR
OF MONEY. IT IS TRULY A BLESSING TO HAVE A VIEW OF KIETH
SPRINGS
MOUNTAIN AS THE GREENS SEEM TO FLOW UP THE MOUNTAIN WITH
EVERY
NEW DAY. COME VISIT, SAY HELLO AND ENJOY THE VIEW.
FIRST
AND FOREMOST AND MOST IMPORTANT
FOLKS,
MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW FOR APRIL 16 MEETING OF THE
TENNESSEE
VALLEY W000WORKERS. THAT’S A LITTLE EARLY IN THE
MONTH,
BUT IT IS THE THIRD TUESDAY NIGHT AND IT’S STILL AT 7:00
PM.
WE NEED A BIG CROWD TO WELCOME CHARLES ALVIS FROM THE
TENNESSEE
ASSOCIATION OF WOOD TURNERS. HIS PROGRAM IS TO SHOW ALL
TYPES
OF TURNINGS FROM ALL TYPES OF WOOD. WE ‘RE GOING TO SEE A
LOT
MORE THAN BOWLS, LADIES AND GENTS. Now, MR. ALVIS IS COMING
ALL
THE WAY FROM NASHVILLE TO DO THIS PROGRAM. WE NEED A GREAT
TURNOUT
TO SHOW THE URBAN WOOD TURNERS WHA T A FINE GROUP WE HA VE
DOWN
HERE IN RURAL SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE. TOM COWAN SAYS WE
DON’T
WANT TO MISS WHAT MR. ALVIS WILL BRING WITH HIM SO BE THERE
TUESDAY
NIGHT AND BRING A FRIEND, TOO. IF YOU CAN’T FIND A
FRIEND,
A SPOUSE OR NEIGHBOR WILL DO!!!
HOW
I SPENT MY WEEKEND IN HOTLANTA OR WHY I DREAD THE 1-75 SPLIT IN CHATTANOOGA
EIGHTEEN
BRAVE SOULS SHOWED UP AT KROGERS A T 5:00 AM SATURDA Y
MORNING
FOR THE TRIP TO THE ATLANTA WOODWORKING SHOW. IT WAS
LUCKY
THAT WAKE UP CALLS WERE AVAILABLE. THE TRIP STARTED OFF
WITH
A TRIP OVER MONTEAGLE MOUNTAIN AND I’M NOT SURE IF TOUR
DIRECTOR
BISHOP PLANNED IT BUT THE DOGWOODS AND REDBUD S WERE
BEAUTIFUL.
AFTER A SHORT BREAKFAST IN SOUTH PITTSBURG, WE
TRAVELED
ON TO ATLANTA. THE MEN HEADED STRAIGHT FOR THE
WOODWORKING
SHOW, BUT US LADIES HEADED FOR DOWNTOWN ATLANTA.
WHEN
WE FINALLY ARRIVED AT THE SHOW, ABOUT SIX HOURS LATER, WE
FOUND
SEVERAL TIRED, BUT HAPPY GENTLEMEN. PLENTY OF THEM WERE
LUGGING
AROUND THEIR PURCHASES. EVERYONE ENJOYED THE FREE
SEMINARS
AND THE ON GOING AND CONSTANT DEMONSTRATIONS. MY FIRST
IMPRESSION
OF THE SHOW WAS THAT IT SURE WAS LOUD IN THERE.
PURCHASES
INCLUDED JIGS, SUPER GLUES, BLADES, MA TS, AND WHAT I
CALL
THE SHOW STOPPER. IT WAS THIS DISC THAT WILL CUT ANYTHING AND I MEAN ANYTHING.
BRICKS, FILES, EVEN PLASTIC! AND IT LAST A LIFETIME.
WHAT
I COULDN’T COMPREHEND WAS IF IT WAS MADE TO LAST A LIFETIME,
WHY
THEY GAVE YOU AN EXTRA DISC IF YOU MADE YOUR PURCHASE AT THE
SHOW????
IT JUST GOES TO PROVE THAT OLD SAYING “IT IS MORALLY
WRONG
TO ALLOW A SUCKER TO KEEP HIS MONEY” AND FOLKS, IF WE’RE
REALLY
LUCKY, WE MAY GET FRED HELTSLEY TO GIVE HIS IMPRESSION OF
THE
GUY. WHEN EVERYONE‘S FEET STARTED HURTING, WE LEFT THE SHOW
AND
HEADED FOR HIGHLAND HARDWARE AND THEN HIT THE INTERSTATE FOR
HOME.
I SAW ON THE CHATTANOOGA NEWS THAT THE MESS OF 1-75 WAS
CAUSED
BY TUNNELING TRAFFIC TO ONE LANE TO PREPARE FOR
CONSTRUCTION
OF EIGHT LANES THRU THERE. JUST A WARNING. THEY
EXPECT
THIS FOR THE NEXT FOUR TO TWELVE MONTHS. WE NEED MORE
TRIPS
LIKE THIS AND GEORGE REID, THE BUS DRIVER, DID A FINE JOB
OF
ESCORTING US AROUND ATLANTA.
MARCH
MEEEEEEEEEEEFEEEEEEEEEEEETING
EVEN
THOUGH WE WERE ALL EXCITED ABOUT TRAVELING TO BILL KNIGHTS
SHOP,
WE HAD TO HAVE OUR SHOW AND TELL SESSION BEFORE WE HIT THE
ROAD.
TOM GILLARD TRIED HIS HAND AT TURNING SOMETHING AND SO HE
DID.
( IT APPEARED TO BE A GOBLET TO ME, TOM. ) WINFIELD MADE A
THRESHOLD
FOR HIS SON’S HOME AND IT WAS OUT OF WALNUT. IT WAS
VERY
NICE. HE SAID HIS SECRET TO FINISHING IT WAS PASTE WAX.
JACK
TOWNSEND HAD A SQUIRREL FEEDER THAT HE COULD PROBABLY SELL
PLENTY
OF IF HE JUST TAKES A SNAPSHOT OF THAT SQUIRREL SITTING
THERE.
TOM COWAN MUMBLED SOMETHING ABOUT “SMART, UGLY, AND
INSANE”
BUT I DIDN’T KNOW IF HE WAS TALKING ABOUT JACK OR THE
FEEDER.
TOM AND PHIL BISHOP SHOWED SOME ITEMS BUT MY HANDWRITING
IS
COMPLETELY ILLEGIBLE AT THAT POINT. RICHARD GULLEY HAS BEEN
ROAMING
THRU BIG LOTS, AGAIN. THIS TIME HE FOUND SOME SWISS
SANDPAPER.
I GO FOR THE SWISS CHOCOLATES MYSELF, RICHARD
LIBRARY
EXHIBIT LIBRARY EXHIBIT LIBRARY EXHIBIT
THIS
IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW YOUR STUFF AND HELP THE
TENNESSEE
VALLEY WOOD WORKERS GAIN SOME WIDER RECOGNITION. CROCIA
R0BERS0N
HAS TALKED THE LIBRARY INTO DISPLAYING SOME OF OUR
ITEMS.
WE WANT TO ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO BRING AN ITEM TO DISPLAY
IN
THE EXHIBIT. CROCIA ONLY HAS ONE FAVOR TO ASK. YOUR ITEM
NEEDS
TO BE UNDER TWELVE INCHES HIGH. IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING YOU
WISH
TO SHOW BE SURE AND BRING IT TUESDAY NIGHT. OR IF YOU HAVE
ANY
QUESTIONS. JUST CALL CROCIA. I’M SURE SHE WILL BE ABLE TO
HELP
YOU.
LAND
OF GOSHEN, WE’RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE AUNTIE EM
YES
FOLKS, THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE MARCH MEETING WAS OUR VISIT TO
BILL
AND EVELYN KNIGHT’S LOVELY HOME AND SHOP. OR AS BILL SAID,
HIS
PLAYHOUSE. THE SHOP HAD A WOOD FLOOR, WOOD STOVE, BATHROOM,
AND
SINK. BILL SEEMED TO HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR ALL OF US. I
THINK
I COUNTED ABOUT 30 IN THE SHOP AT ONE TIME. TOM COWAN AND
PHIL
BISHOP ADDED TO THE PROGRAM. TOM SHOWED SOME HOLDING
DEVICES
HE MADE FOR HIS LATHE AND PHIL HAD A GREAT COLLECTION OF
ANTIQUE
TOOLS. WE REALLY WANT TO THANK BILL AND EVELYN FOR THEIR
HOSPITALITY.
LET’S VISIT MORE SHOPS.
DON’T
FORGET WE’LL HAVE SHOW AND TELL THIS MONTH JUST LIKE
ALWAYS.
BRING SOMETHING YOU BOUGHT IN ATLANTA OR BRING WHAT
YOU’RE
GOING TO PUT IN THE LIBRARY EXHIBIT.
