TENNESSEE VALLEY WOODWORKERS         MARCH 1991

SPLINTERS

MARCH

BEWARE OF THE IDES OF MARCH!!! SET THE CALENDAR IN ONE EYE AND

THE TENNESSEE VALLEY WOOD WORKERS MEETING IN THE OTHER. WELL I’M

SURE THAT’S NOT QUITE THE WAY THE HONORABLE MR. SHAKESPEARE WOULD

HAVE PROCEEDED TO REMINDED A NOBLE AND SCHOLARLY GROUP OF A

MEETING, BUT YAWL GIT MY DRIFT”. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT MARCH IS

ONE OF THOSE “FORGETTABLE” MONTHS... COME TO THINK OF IT, MARCH

MAY INDEED BE THE ONLY “FORGETTABLE” MONTH.... UNLESS YOU CONSIDER

“IN LIKE A LAMB AND OUT LIKE A LION” SOMETHING MEMORABLE. I’M NOT

ENTIRELY SURE THAT OLD EXPRESSION REALLY HOLDS MUCH WATER ANYWAY.

MAYBE “IN LIKE A SNAKE AND OUT LIKE A SNAKE” WOULD BE JUST AS

APPROPRIATE. DON’T GET ME WRONG, I HAVE NO PARTICULAR GRUDGE WITH

THE MONTH OF MARCH. I’M JUST ANXIOUS FOR SOME SERIOUS SPRING!!!!!

IF MARCH LEAVES US WITH A LION’S SHARE OF SNOW... THEN YOU HAVE ME TO BLAME. AT LEAST WE’LL KNOW MARCH DOES ACTUALLY HAVE SOME REAL CHARACTER.

I THINK TOM COWAN IS GOING TO HAVE MAPS AVAILABLE FOR THOSE WHO

THINK THEY WON’T BE ABLE TO FIND THEIR WAY HOME. Now ONCE WE GET

APRIL PREVIEW

IF YOU WANT TO LICK YOUR CHOPS FOR EVEN MORE EXCITING EVENTS

COMING UP, THE APRIL MEETING LOOKS LIKE A WINNER, TOO. MEMBERS

OF THE TENNESSEE ASSOCIATION OF WOOD TURNERS WILL PUT ON A PROGRAM

FOR US. THEY ARE RETURNING A FAVOR THAT SOME OF OUR MEMBERS DID

FOR THEM LAST YEAR.

AT LEAST I KNOW WHERE IT IS CATEGORY

AT OUR LAST MEETING, SOMEONE MENTIONED THE AMERICAN ARTISANS SHOP IN NASHVILLE, AND SAID WHAT GREAT ITEMS THEY HAD. LAST TUESDAY,

I HAD TO MEET MY SISTER IN MUSIC CITY AND WE DROVE OUT WEST END

AVENUE TO FIND A SEAFOOD RESTAURANT. WE NEVER DID FIND THE

RESTAURANT WE WERE LOOKING FOR, BUT WE WENT PAST THIS SHOP ABOUT

FIVE TIMES. LET ME TELL YOU FOLKS, THERE’S SOME SWEET LOOKING

THINGS IN THE WINDOWS. LOOKS LIKE A GREAT PLACE TO GET INSPIRED.

AND HOW TO GET THERE???? WELL, IF YOU GO OUT WEST END, IT’S

RIGHT ACROSS FROM ST. THOMAS HOSPITAL. AND IF YOU CROSS THE 640,

OR IS IT 440, INTERCHANGE, LIKE THE PROFESSOR SAYS—- YOU‘VE GONE

TOO FAR.

FEBRUARY MEETING

SHOW AND TELL STARTED WITH PHIL AND HIS BOWL HE GLUED UP IN HIS

LAST DEMO ON SEGMENTED BOWLS. WELL, HE FINISHED IT AND IT LOOKED

GREAT. HENRY HAD A STAVE BOWL WITH A SEGMENTED BOTTOM. HENRY

ALSO BROUGHT SOME OF HIS MISTAKES WITH HIM.. THE BOWL WITH THE

STAVE BOTTOM WAS NOT A MISTAKE. BOB REESE HAD HIS VIOLIN THAT’S

IN THE DRYING STAGE AND TWO LITTLE PIECES OF WOOD, ONE CURLY

MAPLE THE OTHER SPRUCE--TOTAL COST $80. TOM COWAN HAD SOME

PRIMITIVE KITCHEN TOOLS THAT WERE CUT WITH A CHAINSAW ON SATURDAY

AND BY TUESDAY THEY WERE ON MARY’S KITCHEN TABLE. RIGHT, MARY ?

LET’S NOT FORGET THE GREAT PROGRAM THAT RAY SHEDD GAVE US ON

EMERGENCY CARE. I THINK YOU CAN ALWAYS TELL HOW GOOD A PROGRAM

IS BY THE NUMBERS OF QUESTIONS ASKED LATER, AND ROY’S PROGRAM

SURE GENERATED THE QUESTIONS. SOME OF YOU HORROR MOVIE FANS

MISSED SOME GRIZZLY DETAILS.
