TENNESSEE VALLEY WOODWORKERS                      JUNE1990

SPLINTERS

WELL HERE IT IS JUNE ALREADY! IT’S NEARLY HALF WAY THROUGH ANOTHER

YEAR. JUST ANOTHER FEW WEEKS BEFORE SUMMER OFFICIALLY BEGINS.

SUMMER ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE A SLOW TIME FOR WOODWORKING AROUND OUR

PLACE....BETWEEN BROKEN TILLERS, BROKEN LAWNMOWERS AND BROKEN

BACKS THERE SEEMS TO BE LITTLE TIME OR SPACE FOR ANY PROJECTS

OTHER THAN SURVIVAL. NOW FOR A LITTLE LITERARY ENLIGHTENMENT...

A FEW FAMOUS OR NOT SO FAMOUS LITERARY QUOTES OF JUNE:

FROM LORD BYRON

“SEEK ROSES IN DECEMBER, ICE IN JUNE”

ANONYMOUS (OLD ENGLISH PROVERB)

“A SWARM OF BEES IN MAY

IS WORTH A LOAD OF HAY;

A SWARM OF BEES IN JUNE

IS WORTH A SILVER SPOON;

A SWARM OF BEES IN JULY

IS NOT WORTH A FLY.”

LOCAL MEMBERS RECOGNIZED BY STATE ORGANIZATION

HENRY DAVIS, TOM COWAN AND BILL CHEW, WERE ASKED TO GIVE A

PRESENTATION AT THE TENNESSEE WOODTURNERS ASSOCIATION IN

NASHVILLE. THEIR PRESENTATION WAS AT THEIR LAST MONTHLY MEETING.

WE WILL BE VERY INTERESTED IN THEIR~REPORT.

MAY MEETING

IF YOU WERE NOT PRESENT AT THE MAY MEETING, YOU MISSED A FINE

PROGRAM AND EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE

DIFFICULT CHORE OF PRICING YOUR HANDMADE ITEMS FOR SALE. WE HAD

A DISTINGUISHED PANEL OF EXPERTS THAT INCLUDED; OUR EVER POPULAR

PROGRAM CHAIRMEN, BOB REESE, ANNIE RUTH NORVELL (SHOP MANAGER OF

FOOTHILLS CRAFTS), CAROL GRUMBACHER, GRAFTER AND ON THE BOARD Q~

DIRECTORS OF FOOTHILLS, AND OUR TALENTED MEMBERS, TOM COWAN M4D

HENRY DAVIS. ADVISE ON HOW TO INCLUDE THE TOTAL COST OF ITEMS

WAS HELPFUL TO EVERYONE PRESENT. SALES AND MARKETING TIPS WERE

GIVEN. IF YOU DID NOT RECEIVE A COPY OF BOB’S INFORMATION ON

PRICING, YOU ARE MISSING A VALUABLE TOOL. EVERYONE THOUGHT IT

WAS AN EXCELLENT PROGRAM AND WE ALL WANT TO THANK BOB FOR THE

TIME HE SPENT PREPARING THE INFORMATION.

SHOW AND TELL

ONCE AGAIN THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF GOODS IMPRESSED US ALL.

HENRY DAVIS BUILT A WALNUT END TABLE WITH CABRIOLE LEGS THAT

EVERYONE ENVIED -- HIS TALENT AND HIS OWNERSHIP. BILL CHEW HAD

TURNED A GORGEOUS CHERRY BOWL AND SOME NICE CEDAR ONES ALSO..

WINFIELD HAD A NEW WALKING STICK AND TOM CHURCH BROUGHT A SHOE

SHINE KIT THAT COULD BE COPIED INTO A FINE CRAFT SHOW ITEM.

WE HAD A VERY TALENTED VISITOR FROM HUNTLAND, JOE PLUNKETT.

HE MADE THE NICEST SOLID CHERRY TRICYCLES THAT ANY ONE HAS EVER

SEEN. AND HE HAS A UNIQUE PATTERN FOR A SOLID DUCK PULL TOY THAT

WE WOULD ALL LIKE TO HAVE.   BROTHER PLUNKETT IS VERY TALENTED AND

WE HOPE THAT HE CAN JOIN OUR CLUB SOON. I BELIEVE HE COULD TEACH

US SOME FINE FINISHING TECHNIQUES. I BROUGHT A JAPANESE PUZZLE

BOX AND WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY. I WENT HOME MINUS A NICKEL.

PAGE THREE

THERE IS NO PAGE THREE THIS MONTH FOLKS, TOM’S GOT TO CATCH A

PLANE AND I HAVE A HOUSEFUL OF RELATIVES. BUT IF YOU COME TO THE

JUNE MEETING YOU WILL RECEIVE A SKETCH OF A VERY UNIQUE,

PRACTICAL, AND KNOCK DOWN DISPLAY STAND FOR WOODWORKING ITEMS.

JUST DIDN’T GET TIME TO FINISH THE SKETCH. THAT’S ALL FOLKS.
