The “Dog Days” of August are upon us. Just, too hot to do anything. The scrap boxes are filling up just waiting for those ‘fires to chase off the chills of Fall. Speaking of filling up, what a picnic ! The Tennessee Valley Woodworkers Third Annual picnic was a big success. about 45 members and families feasted. There was enough food to feed the masses. Thanks to all of you for your goodies and help.

Beyond the fine food and conversation, was our Second Annual Contest. Richard Gulley, Bill Knight, and Henry Davis all extend their appreciation to all participants ( about 30 entries ) and the expert and distinguished panel of judges. The results are permanently and thoroughly documented on video tape Thanks to our guest videorapher (Philsis brother-in-law). We’ll schedule a replay as part of a future program. Maybe we can get everyone to bring all those “leftover” goodies too, Sort of a picnic replay. Don’t clean out that refrigerator yet.

We had numerous ties in nearly all categories which was a fine reflection on all participants. We were all too busy eating or talking to formally document all the results. Richard was able to recall nearly every one. In the interest of accuracy the Firsts were:

Don’t let it sneak up on you. As usual -- Third Tuesday August 16, 7:00 at the Duck River Electric building in Decherd. Across from the now defunct Wendy’s. No more Frosties for some of your folks. Our program promises to be “ a live one”. Tom Cowan and Bill Shirley will be presenting a session on Tool Making - with demonstration. The emphasis will be on turning tools. Bill Shirley, of course, will contribute some of his vast knowledge of metallurgy.

It promises to he a great opportunity to learn from each other. If you have any favorite or- not so favorite tool~, bring them with you. We can always .I earn from our problems. Don’t forget that every program includes SHOW AND TELL.

SOLICITATIONS

No, we’re not soliciting your money like those panhandlers in Nashville. We’re after something more valuable, your ideas. We’re always looking for ideas for meeting, programs, field trips, newsletters articles, notice of coming events, items for sale, and

wanted to buy or build. Let Phil Bishop or Tom Cowan, or myself know about it. Bring it up at a meeting. How about a new Club project?

——Saw blades——Dale Daniels is selling DML saw blades. They’ve got some new designs out with great claims. -Pete Lara has nothing but praise for their hand saw blades. Dale does some good and reasonable sharpening. Call 455—5024.

Has anyone ever heard of Thomas J. Gillard Jr. from Tullahoma. He’s written a letter- to the editor in this months issue of WOOD, from Better Homes and Gardes. We should try to track him down as a member or a program -- preferably both.
