SPLINTERS
BAND SAWS
Thanks to Bill Shirley for his super discussion at the April
meeting. For those who missed it., Bill gave a walk through of the band saws he
has made, showed how blades selected and welded, and spoke about those features
we should look for when we buy a saw. There sure is a lot more to it than
finding one that will fill up the empty spot in the workshop! Being the owner
of a lot of metal working machines and about 30 years at AEDC in the machinist
trade, Bill scratch built the saws he’s made and gone to a very efficient bearing
set-up. If you missed the talk, make
sure you get some pointers from Bill on band saws before you purchase your next
one.
SHOW AND TELL AT THE MAY MEETING
Tom Baskin wants us to really turn out with the projects we
stacked up during the winter building season. Our meeting is. at 7:00 pm at the
DREMEC building in Decherd on May 21st. The last program we had for show and tell
was a great success because many of you brought treasures to talk about - As
many chilly evenings as we had last winter must have resulted in a lot of woodworking—
come share it with US. Also bring a friend, they will. be able to see that only
a few members are in the expert class, the rest of us ate real wood butchers!
See you on the 21st!!
CONTEST
At the last meeting the contest committee passed out the
details for the first annual Tennessee Valley Woodworking contest. The
Committee, headed by Henry Davis has done a great job. As you know, the
entrants will be judged by a panel of judges who will make awards in the four
categories.
Jack Townsend has really been out beating the bushes. he
spoke with the North Jr High Manual skills teacher, Jimmy Moss who is
interested in the club and the contest for both himself and his students. Jack
is also responsible for the many flyers hanging in the windows and on suppliers
bulletin boards! Thanks Jack’
While I realize that this is a somewhat short newsletter.,
it’s about all I could put on paper after being on a business trip and
forgetting that this was the deadline week! A fortunate call from Tom Church
got me in gear. Sure could use some inputs from the membership. Try it, you might
be just the hidden talent the newsletter needs.
