SPLINTERS

Issue 11, November 11, 1996

The nominating committee has completed it’s search for members who would like to serve as an elected official of the club. A list of nominees will be available at the November 19th meeting. Nominations may be made at the time of the election (provided the individual agrees to the nomination) , so if you’ve had a change of mind and would now like to join in the fun of running the club, you still have another chance. Normally the elections are held in December so the newly elected officials can begin their terms at the next meeting. This year our December meeting is being hosted by the Church’s and we don’t want to impose our elections on their special hospitality. Therefore we will hold elections at the November meeting as part of the agenda. You need to bring a pencil, pen, or any other writing object to mark your secret ballot.

PROPOSED CONSTITUTION CHANCES

Some changes to the constitution were discussed at the last Executive Board meeting and will be offered to the club membership for our review. Dues and types of memberships available are the subject of the changes. In summary the changes allow for regular membership to be extended to anyone who is interested in joining the club. Family memberships are to be available for all members of a household at $15.00 per year per family. Associate memberships will be offered to businesses at a rate to be determined by the Executive Board. All regular or family members are entitled to vote but officeholders must be over 19 yrs. old. Also, dues will be payable an a prorated basis for those joining the club during the year. The President will read the exact wording of the changes at two meetings before they will be voted on by the membership.

TOYS FOR TOTS

At the last meeting Terry Penn and Henry Davis showed some examples of the toys they made for the toys for tots effort. Henry also distributed some more plans for projects that members might to try. We’ve contacted the Tullahoma Fire Dept. and Jim Morse of the Herald Chronical they’re the leads for the toys for the needy programs in the two communities. Both are very interested in having us donate toys. If we can have our toys ready for our December 15th woodworking club meeting, Terry Penn and I can make sure they get turned in on time . We also hope to get some good publicity for the club. Hope you’re working on some toys—they ‘re sure needed! If you have any questions or need some more plans call Joe Pawlick or Terry Penn.

OCTOBER MEETING. GREAT SHOW!

Our October meeting featured planned events and a whole batch of great individual “show and tells”. David’s discussion of panel doors will help a lot of us do a better job when we start one of those seemly impossible cabinet jobs. I can’t hope to write up a summary of the unplanned part of the meeting there were too many participants to do them all justice! We had a great mixture of woodworking items, from rubber band guns to duck calls, turned bowls to neat tools (others might call them gadgets) . If you missed the meeting, you missed one of the best we’ve had so far. Make it a point not to miss any morel!

NEXT MEETINGS — MAKE PLANS NOW!

Our November meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 18. It will start at 7:00 at the meeting room of the DREMEC building “on the boulevard” in Dechard. Phil Bishop, our Program Chairman extraordinare will have another great program for us. If you have any toys for tots projects, or other woodworking related undertakings , bring them in, we’d like to look at them.

Susan and Tom Church have graciously offered to have the December meeting at their home in Belvidere. They would like us to have a look at their shop and get into the holiday spirit with them. Look for more details in the next newsletter.

SURVEY RESULTS

Just in time for Christmas lists! Hot off of a computer analysis are the results of our recent woodworking tool survey. I’ve included a tally of all surveys returned on the last page of this newsletter. A glance at the results show that most of our members have Craftsman tools and they are, for the most part, pleased with their performance. The exception seems to be the small Craftsman jig saw which didn’t receive very good endorsements. It’s the same one marketed by Dremel. Makita owners seem to be very happy with the performance of their tools although there aren’t very many Makita users.

I thought the best and worst tool purchases were interesting. Some people like power screwdrivers and one other thought it was a bad buy ! I hope the listing is of some help when you make your next tool purchase. If you’re interested in first hand comments concerning a particular tool, the Secretary has the surveys on hand and will give you the name f those who have a particular tool.
