Tonight’s Program is a presentation of Intarsia by Kevin Deuermeyer.

Kevin started his program by first giving a short history lesson in the origin of Intarsia.  He stated that it began in North Africa in the 1300’s and migrated to Italy around the 1500’s and then into Europe.

Kevin demonstrated his method of creating Intarsia from established patterns by using a slide program and actual pieces of Intarsia that he had created.  By using photos he explained each step in the process.  The first step was the selection of woods to be used which would determine coloration and grain in the piece that was being created.  He explained that the coloration of the wood could be used to create a 3 dimensional effect and that the grain would add additional features in the piece itself.  Once the pattern was adhered to the wood pieces Kevin went on to explain the importance of having the saw table square to a sharp saw blade.  This was in order for all the pieces to fit tightly together.   Another major step was the shaping of each piece or contouring the piece to its surround pieces.  This is done to create a life like appearance in living items such as animals, flowers or trees.  Once the contouring was completed, Kevin explained the process of gluing the pieces to a backer board.  He then explained that after the glue had dried how to go about cutting the excess backer board off and giving the entire piece a final light sanding.  He stated that by using a sprayed finished it gave a better result due to it getting into all the crevices.
