TVWW MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES

Loyd Ackerman called the meeting to order at 7:05.

The club welcomed Doug DuBois and Doug Barncard as new members.

Byron Gordon and his two sons, Aaron and Alex were guests.  Byron is Bob Addingdon’s nephew.

Chuck Taylor was thanked for his continuing work on splinters.

The club exhibition “In the Spirit of Fine Woodworking” was a tremendous success with 758 visitors attending.  Loyd thanked everyone for his or her hard work especially the leads in several categories.  He also presented a list of all the door prize winners.

Also please keep TVWW up to date with any change in contact info. This way we can keep you informed with club happenings and news.

Tom Cowen showed a video on the spindle turning held at his shop.  It was very well attended and very successful.

Carver’s Corner:       The Dogwood festival was successful but very wet.   The Carvers meet the first Saturday of the month at Phil Bishop’s shop and they again mentioned that the scheduled workshop is full. 

Felix Rees showed a couple slides with info for the club picnic, which is on Saturday June 5th at 5:00.  Please bring a covered dish (the club will not supply the meat) and something for the auction.  This auction is the club’s main fundraiser.

Paul Fulks, who is the contact for the spring turning bee at Tom Cowan’s shop, gave details of the event.  It will be Saturday June 20th and start at 9:00.  There will be six lathes available, bring lunch and turning tools if you have them.

Other club events:

                        Coffee Fair – Third week in September.

                        Christmas Ornament workshop – October 3rd.

Fall Seminar – John Brown is chairman.  It will beat Matt Brothers’ shop and will cover building a small table in detail.

Christmas Dinner – Time and place TBD

June program – A history of antique furniture.

Loyd showed a video of the woodworking exhibition, which was shown on Lighttube channel 23.

Also showed an excellent slide show of the exhibition and again thanked everyone for their participation.

The club curio cabinet will be auctioned off with bidding to end September15th.  Results and presentation will take place at the October meeting.

Old Business:             No work will take place on the Falls Mill restoration effort until after the club picnic.  For more info see Ross Roepke.

New Business:           None, but we were reminded to use the club website to keep up with club happenings.

Show and Tell:

Flyers were presented for the Burroughs-Ross-Colville Co.  A lumber company in McMinnville, which wholesales hardwood where you can pick through the stock. Stanley Dunn 931-473-211 is the contact.

Doyle McConnell showed the technique for threading the end pieces of a bed rail for a cord bed.  He discussed the bed extension he made for his Powermatic lathe and said this extension is available to whoever needs it.

Matt Brothers showed slides of bookcases and shelving he had to construct around a fireplace.

Ross Roepke had some chopsticks he made and some fancy ones from Indonesia.  He also displayed a mahogany humidor with some inlaid cherry.

Bob Addington had three pine bowls, which he turned green and dried only for six weeks.  He finished them with five coats of wipe-on poly.

Jim Everett showed a cedar desk set and an outstanding relief carving in which he has 800 hours of work.

Dick Wollam showed two carved ducks.  One was out of butternut and left natural, the other out of scrap pine and painted.  This was for contrast and comparison.

John Wendling brought in a wooden chest of unknown origin to see anyone had any ideas of where it came from.

Program:

Henry Davis demonstrated the different types on video materials that are available in the club library.  He showed many representative clips of different subjects.

Loyd attempted to log on to our website for additional displays from the library but was unsuccessful.
