TENNESSEE VALLEY WOODWORKERS

DECEMBER 20, 2005

The Tennessee Valley Woodworkers monthly meeting was called to order by president Loyd Ackerman on Tuesday December 20, 2005 at 7:00 pm at the Duck River Building, Winchester, TN. There were 50 people in attendance, including visitors.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The club president, Loyd Ackerman, opened the meeting by welcoming all members and guests.

Loyd also announced that the club now has the router that was donated to the club by Woodline. The Executive committee will determine if the router will used as a fundraiser or door prize.

The grand door prizes (two $150 gift certificates to Woodcraft) were won by Ross Roepke and Dan Maher.

Dues for 2006 are now payable. The treasurer, Henry Davis, will be accepting your dues at the regular meetings.

Loyd congratulated the Clarks on their 50^th anniversary.

Loyd thanked the 2005 Exec Committee members and welcomed the new members of the Exec. Committee for 2006. They are listed below.

The club owes a special thanks to Tom Gillard. Tom has been the Splinters editor for the last eight years and has done an outstanding job in this capacity.

The carvers will not meet this month.

Doyle McConnell expressed appreciation to those responsible for the Anniversary Dinner activities. The Dinner was a huge success and enjoyed by all.

OLD BUSINESS:

Dogwood Festival: The Winchester Festival will be held April 7-9, 2006. Ken Gould is the chairman for the event and will have more detailed information as the date approaches.

Ken Gould offered his help to club members that have questions about the new Medicare, Part “D” drug program.

SHOW AND TELL:

Loyd Ackerman showed a video presentation of a Grandfather clock made for his mother-in-law. The video showed various views and stages of completion during the making of the clock case.

Tom Gillard brought two Sailboats, one with a natural edge base.

Ken Gould brought and discussed some very old detail trim planes used by his father.

Henry Davis showed a spalted maple bowl, finished with sanding sealer and minwax.

Ross Roepke showed and discussed a solid mahogany table with curved legs. The drawer slides were made of poplar and the drawers had “secret compartments” hidden in the back. Ross discussed the difficulties encountered in some of the manufacturing techniques. He also brought samples of crosses he made for a church fundraiser.

Jim Acord brought and discussed a brochure from U-Bild, a supplier of woodworking plans. Their web site is u-bild.com. He also brought and distributed a booklet, “The Tree Book”.

Dick Wollam displayed a basswood carving of flowers, a walking stick with very detailed carvings and an owl carved from western cedar.

Jack Rowe showed a small cherry table, finished with Danish oil and coats of polyurethane on the top surface.

Mary Ellen Lindsay displayed a small carved cup, made of walnut.

Fred Heltsley brought and discussed a small pipe rack with clay pipes.

Bob Lowrance brought a “Santa” carving he had carved while attending the John C. Campbell School.

Billy May brought a basswood bull, carved for a friend.

Bob Leonard showed items he had made over the years. They included a knife, carvings of a dog, ax & stump and cowboy boots. He also discussed two books for beginning carvers.

Wayne Beam brought two pedestal stands. One was the first one he built and the other was the last one he finished.

Jim Van Cleave discussed his experience in cutting wax candles on his bandsaw. The job left a major buildup of wax on the blade and the saw would not run. He also discussed the accident he had during the cleaning of the blade and the guide bearings (cut his finger).

PROGRAM:

The program was presented by Tom Cowan. The program topic was “off-center turning” and was demonstrated by Tom turning a sample table leg.

Tom did a “live” presentation of the off-center turning while he discussed the various steps in the process. He also discussed and demonstrated the tools he normally uses in spindle turning processes.

He brought two different tables to show the small variations in the leg design that enhances the basic table appearance. Tom discussed the history of the period furniture and the research methods he uses to find out about the history of furniture pieces.

Tom, as Program Chairman for 2006, made a plea to the club members to give their ideas on programs they would like to see presented. He encouraged members to “step up” and present programs, showing their individual skills and expertise
