TENNESSEE VALLEY WOODWORKERS

NOVEMBER 15, 2005

 

The Tennessee Valley Woodworkers monthly meeting was called to order by president Loyd Ackerman on Tuesday November 15, 2005 at 7:00 pm at the Duck River Building, Winchester, TN. There were 52 people in attendance, including visitors.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The club president, Loyd Ackerman, opened the meeting by welcoming all members and guests.

Loyd also announced that Woodline was donating a router to the club for a fundraiser or door prize. John Troxler is currently in Rehab following his recent surgery.

The carvers will meet Thursday (November 17) at 6:30PM, hosted by Phil Bishop.

Kenneth Clark has a mortising machine and walnut and cherry lumber for sale.

The Christmas party/Twenty Year Anniversary Celebration will be December 9. The Party/Celebration will be held at the Tullahoma American Legion building. The cost is $15 each, with a choice of steak or chicken as an entrée. The club is requesting reservations be made ASAP, so that the proper arrangements can be made with the American Legion Club. Members are requested to bring a gift (preferably something you have made) for the occasion. The grand door prize this year is two $150 gift certificates to the Woodcraft Store in Franklin.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

Dogwood Festival: The Winchester Festival will be held April 7-9, 2006. Ken Gould is the chairman for the event and will have more detailed information as the date approaches.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

The election of officers is scheduled for this meeting.

The nominating committee chairman, Henry Davis, announced the slate of officers for 2006. They were as follows:

The floor was opened for nominations, resulting in no additional nominees. A motion was made by Bob Reese to elect the recommended slate of officers by acclamation. The motion was seconded by Bob Leonard. The motion passed, thus electing the 2006 slate of officers.

 

SHOW AND TELL:

Maurice Ryan brought a spalted maple bowl (his first one) and a cedar box that he made for a friend.

Chuck Taylor brought a series of small turned lidded boxes and a potpourri bowl he made for family gifts.

Henry Davis displayed two bowls. One of the bowls was made from a piece of atlas cedar from the Belvedere area, given to him by Tom Gillard. The other bowl was spalted maple from his back yard.

Bob Leonard showed a detailed fire truck made from twenty different species of wood. He also brought a small paper rack.

Karen Kerce brought a spalted red maple bowl and a sampling of pens made from red maple scrap.

Jim Van Cleave displayed a birdhouse, a cherry serving tray and a carving (utilizing wood filler).

Doyle McConnell brought a “scroll saw” mirror made from curly maple, a compact with a maple inlay and oak burl pens made for Christmas gifts.

Steve Shores brought some carved/burned feathers and a detailed basswood carving.

Bryan King displayed a series of hand planes he had made from “kits”.

Bob Reese brought his 17th violin, taking two years for completion of the beautiful instrument. It is a copy of a 1948 instrument.

Matt Brothers showed some video clips of his latest project, a solid walnut buffet with beaded trim on the drawers.

David Matthews showed a plaque (one of forty-five made for fellow solders during his tour of Iraq) made of purple heart wood from Saddam’s personal supply and pictures of other projects he completed during his tour of duty. He also sang a song, “Back in the Hills of Tennessee” which he had written.

 

PROGRAM:

The program was a video tour of Tom and Susan Church’s activities. The video began with a tour of the Church’s store in Belvedere, conducted by Susan. She explained the origin of the store building and commented about the various items displayed in the store.

The tour moved to Tom’s woodturning activities, starting first in his “rough turned” storage area. Tom discussed his process for roughing and drying his turnings.

The video also featured Tom utilizing his “homemade” lathe and his discussion of the various tools used in the creation of his art.

The program concluded with Susan displaying some of Tom’s work and answering questions from the audience.

The video was produced and directed by Loyd Ackerman and also starred Tom Cowan as moderator.
