TENNESSEE VALLEY WOODWORKERS

The Tennessee Valley Woodworkers monthly meeting was called to order by president Loyd Ackerman on Tuesday May 17, 2005 at 7:00 pm at the Duck River Building, Winchester, TN.

There were 68 people in attendance, including visitors.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Loyd expressed appreciation, on behalf of the members, to Tom Cowan for hosting the turning bee on May 14. Twenty people attended this event.

Karen Kerce, chairperson, announced the annual picnic would be held on Saturday May 21 at Falls Mill and would start at 5:00. The club will furnish BBQ and drinks. Please bring items for the auction. The drawing for the Jet lathe and Delta dust collector will be at the picnic. A set of router bits from Woodline will also be auctioned at the picnic.

Loyd announced that the Christmas party/20 Year Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for December 9th at the Tullahoma American Legion. The cost will be $15 each and the club will underwrite any difference in price. Additional information will follow, as the date approaches.

The Carvers group will meet Thursday (May 19th), hosted by Phil Bishop at 6:30.

Doyle McConnell announced the possibility of having some shop tours. This would be an “open house” type of tour hosted by various members and a time to get together and discuss problems/solutions to various working activities. A sheet was passed to determine interest in having this time activity.

The club was reminded of the Middle Tennessee Woodworking Show, sponsored by Woodline. The show will be at the Tennessee Expo Center on June 15,16, and 17. Admission will be $4 and children accompanied by a parent will be admitted free.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

Segmented Vessel Workshop: Loyd reminded everyone of the workshop on June 4. This first session will be at Loyd’s shop and will begin at 8:00am and will conclude about mid-afternoon.

 

Fall Seminar: Matt Brothers and David Jacobs will co-chair this event. The seminar is set for October 8th at the Forrest Mills church, with Andy Ray as the presenter. The topic will be furniture construction and promises to be another outstanding seminar. The event is scheduled to start at 8:00am and finish around 4:00pm. The cost will be $40 if you prepay by October 4. The cost at the door will be $45.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

No new business was discussed at the meeting.

 

SHOW AND TELL:

Geoff Roehm brought and discussed a 3-phase converter he had built to provide “start-up” power for 3-phase equipment. He also brought a small 10-string guitar (Tiple).

Jim Van Cleave brought a serving tray with inlays of cherry and maple. He also displayed a walnut table he made for the serving tray. He discussed how he used Elmer’s natural wood filler to make the “maple” inlay on the table legs and top.

Steve Shores brought some of his chip carving samples and a carving of Santa Claus from basswood.

Bob Leonard showed his finished pig carving and pictures of carvings from one of his recent tours.

Bob Lowrance displayed his detailed carving of a Dulcimer player.

Bill Davis brought a walnut coat rack with maple inlays and maple feet. The project was finished with polyurethane.

Carl Smith displayed a “buggy jack” made from sassafras and finished with oil.

Karen Kerce displayed a red maple vase she recently completed.

Doyle McConnell brought a finished segmented walnut pedestal. He discussed the special cutter used for joining the segments and his use of Tom Cowan’s design criteria. He brought more book-matched veneer to give away.

Dick Wollam brought a carving of three horses, made from pine. He had this project in progress for three years.

Tom Gillard displayed a sample of a painted raised panel made from MDF. He successfully ran the material through a planer to get proper thickness.

Ken Gould brought two spalted buckeye bowls that he made at the recent turning bee.

Loyd Ackerman brought a segmented goblet, made from maple and bloodwood.

Tom Cowan presented a video detailing the manufacturing steps that were used in making a baptismal font.

 

PROGRAM:

The program was presented by, Joseph Mishtal, the Mohawk Finishing Products representative. Joe briefly discussed general company history. The company specializes in products created especially for furniture touch-up and repairs.

He also brought samples of the latest “user-friendly” products for finishing and repairing. The company products include lacquer, color toners, fill sticks (147 different shades), dye base and pigment base markers, water based wood fill putty, 2-part epoxy color sticks, blend-all sticks and wiping stains. He mentioned that all the company stains would mix with both sealer and finish coats of lacquer.

Product catalogs and color charts were available for handouts.

 

Refreshments were provided by the Bishops and the Clarks.

Coffee was prepared by Juel McConnell and Karen Kerce while the Steadmans were out of town.
