TENNESSEE VALLEY WOODWORKERS
JANUARY MEETING 1/20/04
The Tennessee Valley Woodworkers monthly meeting was called to order by president, Ken Gould on January 20, 2004 at 7 pm at the Duck River Building, Winchester, TN.
There were 71 members and 4 visitors in attendance. The president welcomed the new member, Jim Steadman, noting that name tags and hats were available for purchase through Henry Davis. Copies of Splinters newsletter were available.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Ken announced that the Tormek Sharpening System, awarded as a door prize at the 2003 Christmas party has been returned to the club, in lieu of $300 cash. This machine with accessories is valued at $551.95. The System will be auctioned at the February meeting, with open bidding beginning at $300.01, since the club has a standing offer of $300. If you cannot be in attendance and wish to bid by proxy you must notify Ken Gould in writing as to your minimum and maximum bids prior to the meeting.
The Executive Committee met January 6, 2004. Guidelines were set for club event chairpersons. Club plans were formulated for the year.
Loyd Ackerman has produced a CD that includes all club Web Site information as of December 2003. These CD’s are available for those wanting a copy.
3M Tack cloths are still available for those that did not pick them up at the last meeting.
Numerous woodworking magazines, provided from Ben Whiteacre estate, were brought to the meeting and were available for anyone that might use them.
NEW BUSINESS:
The planned activities for the calendar year were discussed and include the following:
Spring Seminar - Finishing. The co-chairpersons for this seminar are Loyd Ackerman and Tom Cowan. The presenter will be Jerry TerHart. The program is scheduled for April 24th and will be held at the Forrest Mills church of Christ Annex. Registration will begin at 8:00am. Pre-registration is encouraged to assure members a seat, as the club will be inviting other clubs and individuals to attend. Others helping with the seminar include Henry Davis (finance) and Larry Bowers (publicity). A sheet was passed to get an idea of the prospective attendance.
The Summer Picnic - scheduled for May 22, 2004 at Falls Mill.
Coffee County Fair - will be held September 19 through 24 and more information will follow concerning club involvement.
Fall Seminar – Carving. The chairperson for this seminar is Phil Bishop. This will be a presentation by club members and will be held on October 23rd. The seminar location has not been selected.
Christmas Party - will be on December 10 at the Nazarene Church.
The following workshops are being planned:
Carving – Presenter: Billy May. Date and location TBD, expected date is May.
Windsor Stool – Presenter: Tom Cowan. Date is expected to be in May/June.
Tree/Wood Identification – Presenter: Bob Leonard. Date is expected to be in May/June.
Sharpening – Presenter: Bob Reese. Date is expected to be in June/ July.
Chair Caning – Presenter: Carmen Westwick. Date and location TBD.
Project to be determined – Presenter: Henry Davis. Date and location TBD.
Club size: The size of the club has now grown to between 130 and 140 members. A discussion was held concerning the possibility of a larger meeting room. Additional information will be announced, as it becomes available.
Club Exhibit: Ray Torstenson is investigating the possibility of the club having a display of member’s work. He is seeking exhibit space to showcase the work of our artist/craft persons. The Tullahoma Fine Arts Center is very interested for a 2-week or 1 month show/sale with possible craft demonstrations. The dates are to be determined. Other venues are sought in Manchester, Winchester and surrounding area. Ray also mentioned that the Franklin County Arts Guild is presently being formed and expects the club will be asked to participate.
Ray is also active in the planning of Dogwood Days 2005 in Winchester.
Meeting Refreshments: A sing-up sheet was passed around for those to sign that were willing to furnish refreshments at the monthly meetings.
SHOW AND TELL:
Ken Gould brought a lathe tool that he forged from a truck spring and added a walnut handle.
Karen Kerce showed two bowls. One was turned from ambrosia maple and one was a “trash to treasures” small cherry bowl that she salvaged and repaired.
Winfield Bennett brought a set of carved walnut dolphins and “twisted design” walking stick. Most of the carving was done with his pocketknife and the finish was paste wax.
Don Powers displayed two Chittam wood bowls that he had turned.
Chuck Taylor brought a walnut memory box with an inlay of ambrosia maple on the top.
Kenneth Clark showed a picture of a cherry china cabinet that he had made and finished with Minwax clear gloss.
Andy Weaver brought a weed pot turned from stove wood with burnt décor. He also brought a pen/pencil set and a key ring.
Bob Lowrance displayed two birdhouses, featuring carved fronts.
Jim VanCleave showed a jewelry box of cherry with a walnut inlay on the top. Also, a blanket bench from walnut with inlay of Elmer’s plastic wood (natural) filler.
Harry May showed a “Wood spirit” carving from spalled sycamore and a black walnut 3 tiered desert server.
Ross Roepke brought a curly maple breadboard with a mineral oil finish. He also had plans for a Martin birdhouse, using 1 sheet of plywood, for interested members. Also, he brought a box of turning blocks to give away.
PROGRAM:
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the 3M representative canceled the scheduled program.
Bob Leonard presented a very good program, covering the “Introduction to Wood Identification”. He explained the best ways to identify the various types of wood and lead a general discussion of types of wood. He also explained what would take place during the “Tree Identification” workshop that he would present.
